What is the most efficient way of pinging a large number of sites? I'm trying to gather some data.

Take a look at Nagios. It has statistics, alerts, configurable services (ping, http, ftp, etc.) and very nice web UI.

prtg network monitor is a good tool for monitoring, might help you
