I don't know why Debian would be any different but the folders in my root are all 755 or lower not 777. 777 is world writable and a bad idea. The only one set 777 is /tmp/ copernicus / # ls -l drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 2776 Sep 26 15:28 bin drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 1024 Feb 23 2008 boot drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 13840 May 25 22:39 dev drwxr-xr-x 48 root root 3256 Oct 2 15:30 etc drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 96 Mar 11 2009 home drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4168 Sep 16 15:05 lib drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 168 May 13 19:44 mnt drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 104 Aug 28 03:43 opt dr-xr-xr-x 85 root root 0 Feb 16 2009 proc drwx------ 9 root root 592 Sep 17 21:41 root drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3224 Sep 26 16:01 sbin drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 0 Feb 16 2009 sys drwxrwxrwt 7 root root 760 Oct 13 03:10 tmp drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 432 Feb 21 2008 usr drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 360 Mar 11 2009 var Also if it makes any difference which it shouldn't this is a Gentoo box

Thanks for the info. User had run a script to change permissions but unfortunately one entry had '/ folder' instead of '/folder' in it. Simple typo; disastrous results.
