| smtp using postfix

Hi ,
I am working on a vps serverb having debian as OS.
Have installed postfix for sending mails...
but i cannot ping localhost 25 basically I want to send mail using smtp functionality and swiftmailer. for that what shoulld be configured apart from general postfix installtion apt-get postfix?
