Ubuntu Edgy Eft ignoring group permissions

I have no idea why, but unless I use a Linux machine to connect to the server for file transfers (SCP, SFTP), the system is ignoring group ownership permissions.

An example:

-rw-rw-r-- root:admingroup file1.php

Now, as a member of the group "admingroup", I should be able to write over this file, but I cannot. Any reasons? I can change the ownership of the file to my user and it allows write, but never the group.

OS: Ubuntu 6.1 (Edgy Eft)
