Link from excel spreadsheet
count for SEO purposes?

I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on whether a link from within an excel spreadsheet counts for SEO purposes?

Perhaps this is dependent on whether Google reads excel spreadsheets? i.e. are the contents of an excel spreadsheet the same as the contents of an HTML page?

I suspect this would be the case, but I've never seen it mentioned.

In the past I have noticed some companies spamming links to online spreadsheets then linking out to their sites from the spreadsheet. I don't know if it still works, but it seemed to be working back then. It's not a widespread practice (at this time)...

The contents are most definitely read. You can search for excel documents in Advanced Search mode.

Aaah. Thanks.

I'm considering getting my site in a popular, well linked spreadsheet. SEO would be a nice, secondary benefit.

Seems like untapped opportunity. Let's keep this in the down-low then.

The certainly index the links. I have an online spreadsheet on one of my websites and I just tried searching for a unique string of text from it. Up it sprung along with links to sites that had copied it!

Now I need to deal with them.

So much for keeping it on the down low...
