Last month one of our web site having 1000 back links and , now it reduced to 500 or some closer to that. Why is that happening .. What should i do to increase this status.

Have you eyeballed 500 sites that used to link and seen that the link has gone?
If you mean that a particular search engine or a particular link checking package has changed then you need to give some details.

I'm using yahoo site explorer to determine these backlinks ,this month yahoo back links are reduced ,
