Many governments have directories. I'm in one :). Cost - $0. And they put the link up same day.
My real golden egg isn't link development, it's my content generation.

Isn't there a potential problem of getting two many eggs from one basket, ie, using the same resource too many times? Perhaps after a while, Google and other search engines could begin to discount all the links.

Not a problem per say but additional links will likely provide very little if any value, much like sitewide links are discounted. Make sure to get them on the pages most closely related to your site.

The very best ones are either not paid or very low cost. High cost links and golden eggs are normally negatively correlated; if you have a site milking money out of the links it's typically not a site I would consider golden.

Wheel, thank you for replying. Not paid? That is very good, and low cost meaning how much? Cause low cost for me would be like $500 a month. I found a good cheap one for my product for $300 a month that has 1 million views, but its for diet, work out and I am selling green tea. And I make a good profit once I start on it. Just happy to find this place here where everyone can share a bit of info.

I am pretty sure I know of the resource and subsequent 'expanded network' you are talking about and have used it on occasion. Definitely some good links there, but any great campaign requires a wide range of strong links from a range of diverse resources.
Anything else is truly putting all of your eggs into one basket!
You need to now expand out and find further high end links that you do not believe others can find, and find creative ways to secure those as well.

I'm a steak and potatoes kind of guy. Don't believe in golden eggs. Nose to the grindstone kind of thing... But if anyone wants to share I like omelets, too!
Then again, TOS is in play so I don't expect answers to the "burning question".

I am lucky in as much as I have many contacts in universities and local governments which means I can get some nice content and links in there pretty quickly.
However, it has taken me many years to build these contacts and no, I don't share them :) If I were to abuse this, I could very easily lose a good thing.

This forum is so unique. It is the only community I am a part of where people horde information (understandably so), yet want to help at the same time. It is a balancing act.
With that said, this post would be more helpful if somebody actually had the guts to give us a clue as to a site that may benefit us. I understand if you don't want to, but it is just disheartening reading all the posts saying that you've got some but wont share. you might as well say "nanananabooboo!"
Any heroes out their willing to share? :)

Golden eggs are rare and that's a good thing. Silver eggs are less rare and that's a good thing. Copper eggs are less rare still and that's a good thing. Chocolate eggs are always a good thing. The running message here is that it's all good. Seriously.
Several copper eggs can outperform a silver one and several silver ones can outperform a gold one so the trick is just to look for eggs and take note of where the best eggs are yourself. A golden car egg will do little good for a paper making site anyway...
If you find a chocolate egg... no touchy! Those are all mine.

This group gives off more info than one might see at first look. One of the best methods is learning to "read between the lines" by looking for what is NOT commented on as well as what IS commented on.
My best clue is work at it! That effort alone will provide a self-education of what works and what does not work.

What's withholding information about that? I'm not going to do your submission for you.
I was told about this publicly, by Martinibuster, in one of his pubcon talks many years ago. He didn't withhold it either.
You ask for directions, folks here gave explicit directions and a map. Don't expect anything more than that. Either you walk the path following the directions, or you don't. You've got Google the same as everyone else does.

You write "Many governments have directories." True, I'd say most people here are aware of that. I have had trouble getting in these just because my clients don't really fit in most gov't directories.
I have to point out that you did write (in the sentence prior) "I have some, I'm not going to tell you about them :)."
I'd say that is "withholding information". Just saying...
Also, somebody here was nice enough to PM me with a lead. An actual site name! It wasn't like they were giving away a big secret, just pointing me in the right direction. that's all I'm looking for and I think would benefit users.

I think I have a golden egg, that I just started using systematically. I don´t think anyone has tried it before. I would like to share and discuss the idea in private with someone else who also believes to have an unique link building strategy.

The problem isn't your clients, or that you haven't been given specific directions. The problem is that you haven't done the work to find the directories.
Spend some more time looking for directories.
even if you don't find a directory, you may find other stuff.
