| #1 google position then disapears then back to #1?

Ive been working to get backlinks for one of my websites and Ive noticed over the last week that its ranking #1 but when i hit refresh its gone! Then after hitting refresh about the 5th time its back again and so on. How long before this stops and google just ranks the darn site ?

Varies. Happened to me after changing web hosts, IIRC it took a couple of weeks but I have seen reports that vary greatly. Check out the Google forums for old threads on the topic.
