i think the question you want to ask is 'how do i get one-way links pointing to my site?'

interesting find; i wasn't sure that you could put a number on all the ways you can have sites link to you. that's kind of like saying there are only 16 ways for you to find your soul mate.
link building is about building relationships and creatively leveraging them to influence webmasters to link to your site.

Offer to write an article for someone else. Preferably for a site within your niche with a higher rank than you. Usually you can toss in one or two anchored text links back to yourself as well.
Just make sure you are adding value to their site and there should be no problems

definitely read the site and write something that will engage and preferably draw a reaction from the site's readership. if you write close to the structure in which the site's author(s) pen their pieces, you also increase the chance of being accepted to write for the site as a guest author.
