|Forums backlinks not showing|
Backlinks made on forums not picked up by Google
| 9:19 am on Feb 23, 2009 (gmt 0)|
I have been working hard to comment in relevant forums as one part of my SEO strategy. However, these comments are not showing up as backlinks when I search using link:mywebsite.
My problem is that they are sites where some of our competitors have comments that are beign discovered by Google.
Is it just a waiting game until it is indexed? Or is it something else?

Rule #1: Search engines are not SEO tools. What they tell you IS or IS NOT a backlink is not necessarily what is influencing the ranking. The only surefire way to know is to check your rankings.
Beyond that, it may be useful to reconsider forums as a way to help your rankings and instead think of them as a way to increase mindshare [webmasterworld.com].

Thanks - it's a really useful response :)
Do I need to check my rankings for each of my keywords then instead to measure the effectiveness of my techniques?
Do you know any good tools for doing this?

Use yahoo to check your backlinks, which will make more sense than entering"link:yoursite.com"in google.
check backlinks to your domain:
linkdomain:yourdomain.com -site:yourdomain.com(exclude internal links)
check backlinks to any url:
Also SE still get technical problem to index dynamic url well in some forums.
