Internal linking question?

 6:56 pm on Apr 28, 2008 (gmt 0)

Ok I have a keyword internally I want to rank better for and a page specifically built for it. My homepage is a PR8 so I want to bring it close to the homepage to feed off of some of that homepage link juice.

Are the following considered the same?

1. Having a link to that page closer to the homepage
2. Actually having that page closer to the homepage in the site architecture

Say I have www.domain.com as my homepage and domain.com/folder as my first directory.

Basically I am asking should I have that file in that folder specifically or will it be the same to have a link pointing to that page on another page at the same level?

Does this make sense?

Here is a visual since I am a total dork and think it might help:

y = my page of interest

z this is my homepage
zy 1 step down - page lives here and is linked to another page at this level

z this is my homepage
zz 1 step down - page link is at this level
zzy 2 steps down - page lives here

It shouldn't matter if the page lives at -
www.example.com/page.html -
if the incoming links are the same.

should you link with as if the page is external, meaning www.domain.com/page1.html or just ./page1.html.

What's better?

Jajell - generally the level in hierarchy is not important, what is important is the amount of clicks 'in' to the page. What might work very well for you is, link in to the page from the content area of the homepage, and also do a site:domain.com search, and link in to that page from other webpages near the top of that listed query. Never overdo it, and never do it if it does not satisfy the user first.
