|not getting many links|

I have just put a new site online.
I have been working with some success in niche markets till now, this new site is not so niche anymore: many competitors.
The problems is, allthough my site has good quality content (we are actually getting compliments from random visitors through the contact form), I do not seem to be getting many spontaneous links.
I have been trying link exchanges, but without much luck (btw, one of the competitors accepted a link exchange, but removed the link after a week or so, hoping I wouldn't notice! anything one can do about this?)
What's my best bet on getting links?
Please don't say "quality content", we have it!

If you just noticed your link have been taken off, your best bet is to try and contact the webmaster or take theirs off too.
Links to me is the holy grail in ranking high in SE, and to do this succesfully apart from fresh, quality content i assume you already have is to request for one-way links from relevant sites, not competitors. Press releases, blogs, forums,Social bookmarks etc all these can give you one-way links.
You don't need so many links at once, its a gradual process and you don't want the SE's to think your link farming.

Had some guy remove my link too, infact he periodically takes down his entire link page. Strange behaviour...
Just remove HIS link, it's the best way to deal with scum. Harsh, but they will notice it eventually, infact had one link guy get quite angry where I took his link off, boy he was not happy and begged me to replace it. When I asked him why he had removed my link his answer was "We are having a redesign, and will put your link back up, and we want you to include us in your other section too or we won't link with you".
Threats, abuse - I've had it all. It amazes me the desperation in some, I mean to get that one-way, - as if 1 link will make him into a millionaire. Crazy!
