|1682:|| Amazon Warns All Illinois Associates of Possible Termination|
We regret to inform you that the Illinois state legislature has passed an unconstitutional tax collection scheme that, if signed by Governor Quinn, would leave Amazon.com little choice but to end its relationships with Illinois-based Associates. You are receiving this email because our records indicate that you are a resident of Illinois. If our records are incorrect, you can manage the details of your Associates account here. [br][br] Please note that this not an immediate termination notice and you are still a valued participant in the Amazon Associates Program. But if the governor signs this bill, we will need to terminate the participation of all Illinois residents in the Associates Program. After that point, we will no longer pay any advertising fees for sales referred to amazon.com, endless.com and smallparts.com nor will we accept new applications for the Associates Program from Illinois residents.

|1683:|| Facebook Financials Revealed in Leak |
Facebook earned $US355 million in net income in the first nine months of 2010 on revenue of $US1.2 billion, according to documents that Goldman Sachs is providing to clients.
Goldman began hand-delivering copies of the 101-page private placement memorandum for the Facebook offering to its wealthy customers a little after lunchtime Thursday in New York, according to a person who received a copy.
The Goldman customer said he received a separate six-page financial statement containing information on the social networking firm.
The document provides some of the most detailed financial information to come to light about Facebook, which Goldman recently valued at $US50 billion in a separate, $US450 million funding.

The state of DMOZ: "I need to figure out how to get a few new websites into DMOZ. About 5 years ago I created a random site and submitted it to DMOZ and was accepted. Since that time I've not touched the site but it has enjoyed #1 rankings ever since. Many of my other sites have not seen anything close to that success. Only thing I can think to attribute it to - is DMOZ. [br][br]So a few questions: [br][br]1. Is it just me or is DMOZ still *very* important? [br][br]2. Is DMOZ still being maintained? [br][br]3. Should I submit brand new sites, or wait for them to age and rank in the SEs a bit first? [br][br]4. Any other strategy I should adhere to? [br][br]5. Anything else out there working these days like DMOZ (did)?" (-subscription required)

|1686:|| New Google Warning "Webmaster Tools Notice of Detected Unnatural Links."|
Webmaster Tools sends out fresh warnings of "Unnatural Links". With commentary from Matt Cutts. [br] [br]
Google Webmaster Tools notice of detected unnatural links on [domain]![br] [br] We've detected that some or all of your pages are using techniques that are outside our quality guidelines, which are available here: [google.com...] [br] [br] Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links on your site pointing to other sites that could be intended to manipulate PageRank.[br][br]Matt Cutts Responds:[br]Yup, I believe that's real. Remember at Pubcon I said we'd be ramping up our transparency when we think a site is outside our guidelines? This is one of those instances. The key part of this email is "Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links on your site pointing to other sites that could be intended to manipulate PageRank." So one thing to look for is anything that could be considered linkselling, past linkselling, or that sort of thing."
(-subscription required)

Piper Jaffray tech analyst Gene Munster among the Facebook bulls. He just gave an interview to Bloomberg TV which must have made any Googlers listening cringe."

Google is just going to continue improving search instead of trying to compete head-on with Facebook.

|1690:|| Firefox Market Share Overtakes IE In Europe|
Mozilla's Firefox browser has overtaken Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the leader in Europe, the first time Microsoft's browser has lost its top spot in a major market, a web analytics firm StatCounter said.
In December, the open-source Firefox took 38.1 percent of European market share, while Internet Explorer's share slipped to 37.5 percent. Google Chrome saw its share rising to 14.6 percent from just 5.1 percent a year earlier.
"This appears to be happening because Google's Chrome is stealing share from Internet Explorer while Firefox is mainly maintaining its existing share," Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter chief executive, said in a statement.

|1696:|| Thread of Year Nominee - Google Traffic Throttling and Shaping |
The topic of Google traffic throttling came up a good number of times over the past two years or more. Some doubt that it happens - others are convinced but have trouble breaking through the wall of other's doubt.
Last year I saw the analytics for one site that showed a drop to zero Google traffic every day at around the same time - it stayed at zero until the next day and then it cycled again. I also saw another major enterprise site that only had first page ranking for a specific 4-hour period every day. Both of the cases persisted for many weeks, but both eventually "returned to normal".
Just recently someone else contacted me with the graphs to show something very strange. Three months of nearly level Google traffic (unnaturally level in my experience) followed by a huge spike that lasted 4 hours - I'm talking up 1,000%.

Internet-connected TVs made up 21% of all television sales in 2010, according to a recently released report by NPD Group's DisplaySearch. Sales are expected to more than double by 2014.
The only problem is hardly anyone is using them to surf the Internet. Just 45% of those who say they have an Internet-connected TV use that feature, DisplaySearch found.
"It's not something they're looking for, but it's there," said Paul Semenza, senior vice president of NPD Group's DisplaySearch. "It's being included more and more as a standard feature in high-end sets."
In other words, people are picking up Internet-connected TVs without knowing it or caring. It's kind of like buying a car with rain-sensing wipers.
