1281: new post   Google Preparing Groupon Competitor: Google Offers
Google Offers looks and operates much like Groupon or LivingSocial.[br][br]Users receive an e-mail with a local deal-of-the-day. They then have the opportunity to buy that deal within a specific time limit (we assume 24 hours). Once enough people have made the purchase, the Google Offer is triggered and users get that all-too-familiar $10 for $20 deal for that Indian restaurant you've never tried.[br][br]From what we can tell, Google Offers will be powered by Google Checkout. It also includes Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Google Buzz and e-mail sharing options.

1291: new post   Celebrities Don't Always Appear To Help Advertising Effectiveness
As the most significant event in advertising grows nearer, it will be interesting to see how many brands enlist the endorsement services of celebrities during the Super Bowl.[br][br]After all, popular wisdom asserts that getting a celebrity endorsement is a tried-and-true, simple-to-implement way to maximize advertising effectiveness. Sure, it's expensive, but celebrities always yield stronger ties with viewers and, ultimately, greater sales, right?[br][br]Wrong. Over the course of last year, time and time again we observed incredibly low effectiveness scores of TV ads starring celebrities. From Tiger Woods to Donald Trump, we found that with rare exception, celebrity endorsements were largely ineffective and failed to yield the benefits popular wisdom promises. (-subscription required)

Though H.264 plays an important role in video, as our goal is to enable open innovation, support for the codec will be removed and our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies.

These changes will occur in the next couple months but we are announcing them now to give content publishers and developers using HTML video an opportunity to make any necessary changes to their sites.

1307: new post   DMOZ Game Plan
The state of DMOZ: "I need to figure out how to get a few new websites into DMOZ. About 5 years ago I created a random site and submitted it to DMOZ and was accepted. Since that time I've not touched the site but it has enjoyed #1 rankings ever since. Many of my other sites have not seen anything close to that success. Only thing I can think to attribute it to - is DMOZ. [br][br]So a few questions: [br][br]1. Is it just me or is DMOZ still *very* important? [br][br]2. Is DMOZ still being maintained? [br][br]3. Should I submit brand new sites, or wait for them to age and rank in the SEs a bit first? [br][br]4. Any other strategy I should adhere to? [br][br]5. Anything else out there working these days like DMOZ (did)?" (-subscription required)

Remember at Pubcon I said we'd be ramping up our transparency when we think a site is outside our guidelines? This is one of those instances. The key part of this email is "Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links on your site pointing to other sites that could be intended to manipulate PageRank." So one thing to look for is anything that could be considered linkselling, past linkselling, or that sort of thing."[/quote] (-subscription required)

1312: new post   Firefox Market Share Overtakes IE In Europe
Mozilla's Firefox browser has overtaken Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the leader in Europe, the first time Microsoft's browser has lost its top spot in a major market, a web analytics firm StatCounter said.

In December, the open-source Firefox took 38.1 percent of European market share, while Internet Explorer's share slipped to 37.5 percent. Google Chrome saw its share rising to 14.6 percent from just 5.1 percent a year earlier.

"This appears to be happening because Google's Chrome is stealing share from Internet Explorer while Firefox is mainly maintaining its existing share," Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter chief executive, said in a statement.

1318: new post   Thread of Year Nominee - Google Traffic Throttling and Shaping
The topic of Google traffic throttling came up a good number of times over the past two years or more. Some doubt that it happens - others are convinced but have trouble breaking through the wall of other's doubt.

Last year I saw the analytics for one site that showed a drop to zero Google traffic every day at around the same time - it stayed at zero until the next day and then it cycled again. I also saw another major enterprise site that only had first page ranking for a specific 4-hour period every day. Both of the cases persisted for many weeks, but both eventually "returned to normal".

Just recently someone else contacted me with the graphs to show something very strange. Three months of nearly level Google traffic (unnaturally level in my experience) followed by a huge spike that lasted 4 hours - I'm talking up 1,000%.
