1123: new post   Research on Google's Panda and Link Exchanges
Make no mistake about it: Panda is Google's way of reminding would-be corrupters and despoilers of the Word Wide Web search industry, an industry that Google "owns" (or at least thinks it does), that payback is a bitch, that the time for payback is now, and that the payback penalties may be severe.

1125: new post   Panda Metric : Google Usage of User Engagement Metrics
I am continually surprised at some in the community that point to a couple of individual metrics as 'the ones' that caused xyz to happen in the most recent update. I think it is time to look at the greater picture of data that Google has available.[br][br]Eric Enge had a presentation at PubCon Austin that he felt Panda pumped up 20% user engagment metrics into the algo. It really got me thinking about this aspect indepth. I started to put together a list of possible data sources google could use as metrics (signals), and I was pretty surprised at how large a list it became with very little effort.

1132: new post   Adding 25,000 Pages to a 3,600 Page Site
We want to expand the site to include all real estate listings in the whole state. Doing this would add about 25,000 new spider-able listings to the site and our longtail searches should increase quite dramatically. Is this something I can do all at once, or should I take it a bit at a time? And, do you have any recommendations on the amount of pages I should add a day?

1133: new post   Sony PlayStation Network Hack Attack May Have Stolen Personal Data
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

1135: new post   YouTube Goes Full Hollywood With Movies on Demand Service
YouTube will imminently launch a movie-on-demand service charging users to stream mainstream Hollywood movies off the world's largest video sharing site, TheWrap has learned. [br][br] The new service means a full-bore challenge to Apple's iTunes service, currently the most powerful player in paid video streaming, and a welcome new revenue stream for Hollywood as home entertainment revenues continue their steep decline. [br][br] The service may start as early as this week or next, and is expected to be announced soon by YouTube. [br][br] Major studios including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers and Universal have licensed their movies for the new service, as have numerous independent studios, including Lionsgate and the library-rich Kino Lorber, according to movie executives with knowledge of the deals in place.

"...introducing Instant Previews for Ads as well. Thanks to this new feature, you can now get a preview of the site that hides behind text ads on Google Search without having to click on the link and without leaving the search results page. [br][br]For advertisers, who generally pay Google per click on a text link, this should be a welcome new feature, as it will allow potential customers to see a preview of the site's landing page without having to click on an ad (and hence costing the advertiser money). Advertisers won't have to pay for clicks on the Instant Preview button. [br][br]Judging from today's announcement, these previews will currently remain limited to ads on Google's own search results pages and will not appear on third-party sites that use Google AdSense."

1139: new post   Canonical Tag vs. Block in Robots.txt
"For years, I have simply blocked the long query string URLs via the robots.txt file (The long query string URLs have a "virtual" directory in the URL, so I just block that virtual directory). [br][br]But with "trust" being such an important issue after the Panda updates, I wonder if it might be better to unblock those URLs in robots.txt and just let the canonical tag take care of it. [br][br]In webmastertools, under crawl diagnostics, it lists something like 700 URLs blocked by Robots.txt, and if it is something that is being measured by google, I can't help but think that they are somehow using that information for something."

1144: new post   Amazon Cloud Outage Affected Major Sites
We'd like to provide additional color on what were working on right now (please note that we always know more and understand issues better after we fully recover and dive deep into the post mortem).[br][br]A networking event early this morning triggered a large amount of re-mirroring of EBS [Elastic Block Storage] volumes in US-EAST-1. This re-mirroring created a shortage of capacity in one of the US-EAST-1 Availability Zones, which impacted new EBS volume creation as well as the pace with which we could re-mirror and recover affected EBS volumes.[br][br]Additionally, one of our internal control planes for EBS has become inundated such that it's difficult to create new EBS volumes and EBS backed instances. We are working as quickly as possible to add capacity to that one Availability Zone to speed up the re-mirroring, and working to restore the control plane issue.[br][br]We're starting to see progress on these efforts, but are not there yet. We will continue to provide updates when we have them.

1145: new post   Apple, Google Caught Collecting User Location Data
Wall Street Journal: "...an HTC Android phone collected its location every few seconds and transmitted the data to Google at least several times an hour. It also transmitted the name, location and signal strength of any nearby Wi-Fi networks, as well as a unique phone identifier.[br][br]Until last year, Google was collecting similar Wi-Fi data with its fleet of StreetView cars that map and photograph streets world-wide. The company shut down its StreetView Wi-Fi collection last year after it inadvertently collected e-mail addresses, passwords and other personal information from Wi-Fi networks. The data that Mr. Kamkar observed being transmitted on Android phones didn't include such personal information.

1146: new post   Yahoo Postpones Roll Out Of Microsoft's Ad Programs Outside of U.S.
Yahoo Inc. launched its Internet search partnership with Microsoft Corp. in the U.S. last year with the hope that the alliance would reverse a long decline in ad revenue it gets from search requests. [br][br]But the deal so far isn't generating as much ad revenue per search as Yahoo envisioned. [br][br]Revenue guarantees included in Yahoo's contract will force Microsoft to make up for part of any shortfalls through March 2012. Yahoo is further protecting itself by postponing its plan to rely on Microsoft's search ad technology outside the U.S. until the problem is fixed.

1147: new post   Blekko Adds Facebook Comments To Its Search Results
Considering that the Facebook News Feed has become an extremely popular source for link-sharing, updates, and social commentary, and Facebook Connect now practically blankets the Web, the social network is a logical partner for Blekko. And it gives it that much-envied social flair it had been lacking. [br][br]But, how does it work? Using Blekko's Facebook integration is easy: You simply connect with your Facebook account on the Blekko homepage, and go about your normal searching. The major difference, though, is that when you type 'TechCrunch' into the search bar, you'll still the same search results you would otherwise; yet, now, all mentions of TechCrunch in your Facebook news feed (and thereby mentioned in your friends' feeds) populate the right column. Look out!
