I wonder if there is any experience to be shared about how keywords and their phrases correlate with each other.

Example:

- widget
- green widget
- red widget

Now you work on links within the website as well as on external link building and link bite.

Would you say that "widget" will give more support to ranking of other "widget" related phrases or it would be the other way or somewhere in between/

In other words, if you keep optimizing for widgets only, would you expect to see red and green phrases moving up as well? At the same time, if you're mostly after red and green related phrases, would you expect "widget" only to go up, too?

Thanks
