Box full of keywords?

Many blogs have those boxes that are full of keywords with different styles applied to each. Are those a good idea for a site and do they have a specific name for that?

Wow, that's a cold thread you linked to phranque.

Personally I like them as a compact form of a sitemap. The enlarging of link text based on number of posts is a great help to see if drilling down into a site is worthwhile.

Creating a spammy tag cloud for the sole purpose of posting keywords with NO associated content is just a new spin on keyword stuffing, so 2004ish and frowned on by many.
