oops Adam, I'm sorry but you're throwing out the best performing network as rubbish... I strongly suggest you obtain the services of someone who really knows Adwords well and have them work together with you. Adwords is certainly not something which can be done by novices.

Its not that im a total novice with adwords but when trying to work out search volumes on key word searchs the results that I get back are like 1/2 per day when I know that its more than that!

The volumes you see through Adwords are not total worldwide search volumes but the volume estimated for the campaign you wish to set up. If you want to bid $0.04, in the US only, and you have a Poor Quality Score then you might see 1/2 clicks at the most listed. If you enter a bid estimate of $1, worldwide, and have the ad pointing at somewhere with an Excellent quality score, you could easily see 100/200+ clicks for the same keyword estimate.
