| Wipe gestures in JavaScript

I'm trying to make my website very mobile friendly, and among the things I am trying to do is to make my site as fast to download as possible.
I would really like to add gesture support to the site so if a user swipes some text left it does one thing, and when swiped right it does another. I see this available with jQueryMobile plugins, but I would like to avoid using this library just for one feature. Is there a way to directly program this myself?
