Overlay covering loading video

I am not a programmer so please bear with me.

On my website, I am having a problem with videos loading too slowly, until the jw-player loads, the page remains blank.

In order to enhance the page rendering (at least for the human eye), I thought one could cover the loading video with some graphic overlay and have the video play when the graphic is clicked.

The overlay would be contained in some div tag with say a z-index of 100 covering the player just behind it. When the graphic is clicked, the z-index is changed to -100 and the video starts playing.

Is this possible with Javascript?

JW-Player supports thumbnails, but they are only shown when the player loads completely. In this case, that doesn't help me further.
