Reach for the AJAX book when do not understand how to use Javascript to talk to the server. It is not something you can use instead of Javascript.

You can't do AJAX without JavaScript. AJAX is used for communicating with the server without refreshing the page. Typically, JavaScript will run in the client browser to do things like perform actions on certain events. For example, you could use JavaScript to attach an event listener to a form's submit event, which in turn uses AJAX to send the form data to the server.

Ajax contribute more to user experience. You don't reload the page, is refreshing with informations just that part of the page where is Ajax code.
