Beginner question about setting some things up on my website

Hi all,

I would like students visiting my site to register with my site, so they are 'members'.

I would like for students to be able to leave a small profile of themselves in a 'meeting point' area, so they can be found by other students, and for them to be able to browse other students in the meeitng point. Profiles would include their language interests and levels.

How would I go about setting these things up?

I am a beginner. I used a WYSIWYG editor to create my site so far. Is there a WYSIWYG editor that handle do this?

Thanks in advance,
Dale.

If you've been setting up static web pages, it'll be somewhat more complicated than that. If you've been using blogging software or a CMS (content management system), you're probably more familiar with what you'll need. Check to see if your host offers "one-click" installation through Fantastico or something similar. If so, see what they have avilable for forums, blogging, and other "social"-type stuff.

If you can't find what you want at your host (I'm suggesting that mostly because of ease of installation), a good site to check out is opensourcecms.com, because you can try out a demo of any of the programs they have listed, so you can see if they do what you need and are easy enough to use. The site also has articles on choosing the right program, etc.
