Favicon displays "too small", about 1/4 size

 11:23 pm on Oct 21, 2012 (gmt 0)

the favicon on my (hand-coded html) site is displaying, but the size at which it displays is far too small. I have searched the forums and while I see some other people with the same problem, I don't see an answer...
the answer is not that the image is the wrong size/file type/etc, because I have tried multiple times...am using an .ico file...

Thanks in advance!

Solved this problem, in a way, though it defies the normal logic of coding...

first off, the ico images were in a wrong format, though they were ico files somehow they had not been converted right (when opened in preview, they showed as multiple images instead of just one -- maybe intended for cross browser support?). I had gotten one of these images from the internet and one I converted online...so they were wrongly formatted.

secondly, they only work if they are specifically NOT named favicon.ico! very strange...any other file name.ico works...

Hope to be of help to someone with the same problem in the future!

I figured it was probably a simple format issue, glad you resolved it quickly!

they showed as multiple images instead of just one

Sounds about right.

An old quote from the inestimable jdMorgan:

True .ico files contain three embedded images, one each at 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 pixels in size.

this old thread still has some useful information.

you could always try one of the online favicon validators to test your site's favicon or a .ico file.
