| starting a html document in dreamweaver
i don't know how to start it. |

in dream weaver it automatically starts a new document with:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
I don't know what it means and it confuses me. i know quite a lot of code but i am still fairly new to this.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

"doc types and what they mean"
leave the quote marks on..
