|site doesn't work once uploaded to server!|

I have a small site i have constructed in Dreamweaver. It tests out fine outside of DW in both firefox and IE when clicking from the html files. However, once uploaded to the server, the pages open without images, links, and all text is also in white. I downloaded one of the index.html file back from the server and the same problem when clicked from the file on my computer.
Am i doing something really wrong here? it seems to me that the buttons, images and CSS are not correctly linking to the html page.
Unfortunately i cannot post the code, as there is an error in the style code tags, is there a way of posting it anyway?

Have you tried doing a diff between the original file and the one you downloaded? There are free tools, like WinMerge [winmerge.org] that make this easy. Perhaps identifying what the differences are might help to identify what caused the problem.

Are the CSS and image files in the same directory at the HTML files? If not, how are you specifying the path(s) to them?

Hi, i've got a bit further with it, although, i don't know how...
try this link to the site, for some reason the folders are displayed as part of the site...

it does that when there's no default page in the directory. so it's got nothing to display.
have you got an index.html (or index.htm, or index.php) in the root directory?
[edit - if you click on your 'pages' directory then it seems to work. i think you probably need to take all of the files out of the 'pages' directory, and move them one directory up, into the root.]

Hello, yes indeed that was the problem! Its fine now.
However, it was very strange because i had been trying all day to get the site to work, and it was only moments ago that i was even getting the list of directories on the page. Up until then the url was just taking me back to the hosting website.
Why would that have been? (i had deleted the default html of the hosting website)

i wouldn't worry about it. if you only just bought the domain, or you've only just linked it to your hosting package, it would take a while for the nameservers to update. normally takes a day or two.

That makes sense. I did read about this possibility, wish i hadn't tried to persevere with it for so long, spent hours! Anyway, thanks for your help.
