What is it with toolbars? More and more software these days seems to have options to install one toolbar or other on install. One click too many and next thing you know your browser has another unwelcome visitor.

I don`t think some people even know they can disable these things. I`ve seen people with 50% of their browser viewing pane overrun with toolbars and I don`t think they even notice.

As if that isn`t enough, we now have rubbish javascript toolbars appearing at the bottom of websites that show social network site bookmarks. Who thinks these things are good ideas? Thank goodness for Adblock.

Toolbars are evil, did I say that already? ;)

>>and I don`t think they even notice.

in my neighbours house the other day i pointed out all their toolbars and why do tthey have so many ... the amount of toolbars did annoy them, but they said they didn't know how to get rid of them!

i showed them but i must admit i was at a loss at to how to prevent them installing in the first place ... i actually suggested they install chrome, which i did for them, i'm hoping it doesn't have the same issues re toolbars ...

how do you prevent them getting installed at all - given an unsavvy user - does adblock prevent toolbars beign installed?

It was a while before I realised that Google's Webmaster Tools Site Performance graph was solely based on users with the Google Toolbar installed with the optional PageRank featured enabled. It's reliant on the toolbar phoning home with the information!

I had to uninstall the toolbar from IE as it appeared to be the source of browser problems. However, GoogleToolbarNotifier still keeps on trying to phone home!? There are better plugins available for FF for managing gmail etc. - that aren't compatible with the toolbar!

I had to get the Yahoo toolbar removed from a Vista laptop - that too caused issues!

Evil.

No, I was referring to the javascript menus/toolbars that are appearing at the bottom of some websites and are getting more common. An example would be Wibiya. Web toolbars they are called, although I call them something else. ;)

No argument from me - I've hated toolbars forever and have never operated a browser on my own computer with any.

I agree, I can imagine Andy Hamilton in Old Harry's Game inventing them to torment webmasters.
