I've got a site I worked on a while ago that I put some images on from some image pack that I downloaded from the internet - these were all supposed to be images that are free for whatever kind of use.
A couple of days ago I received a letter from the copyright holder demanding an ungodly amount of money for the two images used that apparently are, in fact, not free. I've immediately taken the offending images down, and intend on responding to the notice, but since their legal department is involved I intend on being extremely careful about what I say.
Since I took the images down as soon as the notice was rec'd, what recourse do I have? I've no intention of paying them a couple grand over what was in effect an accident - especially since I've complied by removing them. Unfortunately I have NO idea where I acquired them from originally as I did the site a while ago. The most frustrating part is that I went out of my way to make sure that the pack I downloaded specifically said that any type of use was acceptable.
