What do you use to create your favicon
(please do not ref to PhotoShop or iconforge)

I am looking to purchase a reliable tool
done some G searches and only found free stuffs from mostly sites to be avoided.
Glad I use a search dedicated machine that can take a lot of beatings!

What's wrong with png2ico?

Sorry if it's free, but you can make a donation. :-)

Load a 16x16 and 32x32 png in the same directory as png2ico, navigate to the directory in the command window, type

png2ico [destination filename].ico [file1] [file2]

. . . . and it's done.

rocknbil,
OK, I will try that one but understand me
I have been almost taken in "garbage land" more that once while searching....
So coming from you, I believe that indeed it is clean.

However I am returning the compliment by asking:

Is there anyone of those for a fee?
I run a small biz and rather rely on something that I could own.
if not point me to a tutorial (including PHP if possible)
and I'll learn how to make my own favicon
thanks.

I've used Microangelo. It will create desktop icons, pointers and I've used it for favicons.

I use Photoshop CS3

There is a free plug-in that works for Illustrator as well as Photoshop

Thanks all, appreciated your input

Anyone viewing this thread should follow Coopster's link, it reveals the .ico meat!

I use The GIMP - latest version gives you the various .ico options on Save As and the option of PNG compression.

Interesting; I sometimes use it too, got to upgrade.
As a matter of facts before starting this thread I looked for it in my Gimp (only about 18 months old) it was not a saving option

Name the file whatever.ico and Save - the .ico options window pops up.
