Over Bidding?

Is there any logic, that can be applied to figure out whether we are bidding more or less?

Nope!
Smart pricing seems to be back in play. The bid to reach front page is the minimum bid to show the ad. Even if there is only one to two other bidders showing on the front page, unless you bid the minimum, you won't show on any pages. Why even use the term front page Google? With your stock sinking, you should be taking all bids and showing them accordingly.
