AdWords Impressions Stopped Late Last Night
and I don't know why!

My traffic has come to an abrupt halt late last night and I'm at a loss as to why. I've go no impressions, and therefore no clicks.

My QS for my keywords is mainly Great, with some OKs and yet none of my ads appear to be showing.

An example is I run a widget forum, and I am the only person consistently bidding on the term 'widget forum'. My QS for the keyphrase is Great and my min bids are above the first page bid estimate, yet I'm now not showing on the main Google search page when you type widget forum in - and actually, there are no sponsored ads on the page at all.

The strange thing is I *think* my account is still active because for another keyphrase, if I search for it and then click on the more sponsored links link (which keeps going missing?), I can see my ad (although the impression isn't counted within my AdWords account), however if I remain on the search page and keep going to the next search page, my ad never appears. Most of the keyphrases I bid on get a mix of search and content traffic, and both appear sources dried up at the same sort of time last night.

I rang Google and the man said he couldn't see any flags etc on the account.

So, anyone got any ideas why my traffic has stopped?!

Interesting. I have exactly the same thing happen, and no apparent reason for it. Zero impressions. OK, I could easily accept zero clicks, but zero impressions, no!

Perhaps it's something so obvious i've missed it.

Wouldn't they have told me that when I called them this morning? They said there was nothing wrong with the account, no flags etc.

the keyword status thing... when you hover over it... it says what?

(am I allowed to quote from my Adwords account here? Mods, pls remove the offending bits below if I'm not!)

Keyword Analysis: *widget*

Ad showing? No
The keyword phrase does not currently trigger any of your ads.
There are several possible reasons why your ad isn't showing for this keyword, including:

You just added the keyword to your campaign. You may experience a short wait as your keyword goes through the review process.
Our system is experiencing a delay.

Quality Score: Great (9/10)

There is no indication as to why the ads aren't showing - none of their recommendation links are anything other than generic help (such as the delay might be because I've run out of budget [I haven't] or the ad group was recently uploaded [it's an old ad group I've not touched for ages]).

Yup same here - it was motoring nicely prior to the sharp cutoff.

OK, well I thought I'd post an update - as it turns out, my account has been banned and it is entirely my fault, and I'll hold my hands up to the mistake I made.

About 6 months ago, I had a guest post some articles on my site about widget gambling/betting. I really liked the content so I thought I would promote it and completely forgot that Google don't allow gambling terms. I tried to put up about 15 ad groups (mainly because my niche has three different ways of spelling it, so I had 5 keyphrases three times, if that sort of makes sense). As soon as I got the first disapprovals through, I remembered Google's ToS and I removed all the offending ads.

My intention was never to subvert their ToS and it was a genuine oversight on my part for which I am paying now. I managed to get hold of someone in Google yesterday after my impressions stopped and they have told me they have banned me for this oversight 6 months ago.

The one thing that has surprised me is how long it has taken them to ban me - from what I've read, normally the bannings are fairly quick after the transgressions so I really am surprised that one slip up 6 months ago has resulted in my ban now.

It also irks me that I'm not a scammer, spammer or MFA. I'm not even an affiliate! I've spent close to a million with Google and the percentage of 'errored ad groups' I had in relation to my running ad groups is tiny, and they don't seem to care - I asked them if they would reconsider the case and they told me never to contact them again.

So there you go...the moral of the story is to double check all your ads before you upload them, as a single mistake may cost you your account later down the line.

Hang on, just so I have this straight in my head, they have banned you for bidding on gambling terms, 6 months after you did it, and after they have removed the restrictions and started allowing people to go ahead and bid on the terms they have no banned you for.

Have you been spcifically told this by an adwords account manager? Because it seems amazing to me that they would do that?!?!

Yup. The first helpdesk person I spoke to said there were no flags on the account and so they would raise it to their technical team (actually, I find it strange the helpdesk guy couldn't tell me I was banned already...). The technical team then got in contact a couple of hours later and told me it was because of the gambling terms on my account.

I went back in to my account to check I hadn't been hacked or anything. I double checked my account didn't have any live gambling ads, and also checked the disapproved ads section of my account and as I said above, the only reference I can find is from 6 months ago.

I am absolutely gobsmacked and I do find it strange, hence why I asked them to review the case however I was told in no uncertain terms never to contact them again. Aside from kicking myself for being so dumb 6 months ago, there's not an awful lot else I can do is there?

Just to update on my situation.
According to Google, their system has detected unauthorised access to the account, which they are investigating. Meantime, the ads are still on hold.

I agree, it has to be investigated with utmost speed, but a better system of alerts to customers ought to be devised, imho.

Seems like a rash of Adwords account hacks have been occuring lately.

The stakes are high enough for many advertisers that it would be nice if they offered an optional extra security measure making account hacks more difficult. (USB dongle, access locked to specific IP addresses, second factor authentication ala Authentify, etc).
