January 2014 AdSense Earnings and Observations
What will the new year bring?

 9:42 pm on Jan 2, 2014 (gmt 0)

Happy 2014! I hope January brings better results than the end of 2013 did.

 11:13 pm on Jan 23, 2014 (gmt 0)

I had the same experience as you guys. 2 great days, where the RPM was back where it "used to" be.

I was excited, maybe adsense was going to go back to serving the right ads for the content, maybe the nickel and dime advertisers weren't going to hog my adspace.

But then today back to an absolutely woeful RPM, again a near all time low.

2 good days then back to the usual crap from Adsense.

Really bad day here as well. Really heartbreaking.

 5:35 am on Jan 24, 2014 (gmt 0)

Today is closing as one of my lowest days EVER, the traffic is good, the numbers are terrible, similar numbers? only when my hosting provider was failing but it's not the case.

I already blocked all the Google Drive / Apps ads and still they appear, it's not new, I blocked them beginning of the week. There is also a company running an aggressive campaign: I block the ads, next day there are a bunch of new ones. I now blocked them all (yesterday) and 24 hours later I still find those ads running, and nowhere to appear on my ads center.

 12:22 pm on Jan 24, 2014 (gmt 0)

although it is time consuming and boring, ads blocking might help a little bit to improve the performance. Might be useful to summarize the 3 different way how to do it, so...
1. Using Chrome Publisher toolbar
- easy to use;
- user can block all ads for an Advertiser
- you give BigG another way to track you
- seems that not all ads you block are REALLY blocked
- combined with different GEO IPs could give you almost complete picture what ads are shown on your pages
2. Using "Ad review center"
- easy to use
- does not list all the ads displayed for your account
- could not block all the ads for an Advertiser
3. Blocking directly in "Advertiser URLs" list in Allow & block ads
- could block all the ads for an Advertiser (just specify "sitename.tld" and you are done)
- the vlacklisted sites in this list will never display a single add if you specify the root address of the site
- sometimes(for image/video/flash ads)you have to mine for the advertisers url in the source code, which is pain in the A..
- limited to 500 urls

to me, what seems to work best is the 3rd approach, because what enters in the list never shows again, which is not valid for the other two... if you combine it with the Chrome plugin, you can use the plugin just to copy the urls, but then you can enter them manually in the "Advertiser URLs" list and you can do it until you hit the 500 limit, which nowadays means in a couple of days :)

Yesterday ended up so far above average (without the usage stats to support it) that either it's all invalid activity that didn't get yanked back right away but will be taken out at the end of the month, or else they did a major catching up from before. Weird. But everything Google does is weird.

 2:45 pm on Jan 24, 2014 (gmt 0)

Thanks primoto, I knew some, not all of the points, G is pushing over Chrome, I hate it (big capital letters). URL is the only effective way or so it seems, but as you say is a pain... in the A. Seems I don't have any other option than playing with chrome.

 4:08 pm on Jan 24, 2014 (gmt 0)

Earnings so far this morning (it's a little after 9 am) are nearly double what they usually are. I wish I could trust that, but these days who knows if the numbers will stick or not.

 10:44 pm on Jan 24, 2014 (gmt 0)

or else they did a major catching up from before

I've seen two straight days (yesterday and the day before) where clicks and revenue didn't show up until late in the day. When this happens you can see revenue increasing steadily over a couple of hours. It's like clicks are being processed in batches on some days. Other days they wander in steadily over the course of the day. It's a guess but perhaps clicks and revenue reporting gets delayed during major updates and then they're run in batches to catch up when the update is finished.

 11:47 pm on Jan 24, 2014 (gmt 0)

or else they did a major catching up from before

I'm seeing some of that both yesterday and today, too. At least on Google Analytics which has yet to show so much as one AdSense impression so far.

Really bad day here as well. Really heartbreaking.

You used to be kind of boastful about how well you were doing. I think you said you'd bought a house with your Adsense earnings. I'm curious about what happened? Did you lose traffic or has your epc tanked or something else?

 4:33 pm on Jan 27, 2014 (gmt 0)

I'm running 40% above January 2013 AdSense revenue.

With direct advertising and affiliate sales this month is turning out to be excellent.

I hope the trend continues through the year, but you never know.

 11:05 pm on Jan 27, 2014 (gmt 0)

My Jan RPM so far is 15% higher than Jan 2013. Hoping this trend continues throughout the year so I can keep my streak of increased RPM (Annual Average) going for a 7th straight year.

 11:32 pm on Jan 27, 2014 (gmt 0)

finally a decent day (yesterday) surprisingly, didn't suppose to be that way, it's usually a low day. So far Jan2014 has been terrible and low, the lowest month in history.

 7:48 am on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

Same ads appearing day after day. My site is gen y. What is "trench shoring services" anyway? I noticed a tee shirt ad appeared for a while. Clicks went through the roof then most of them were removed.

 12:50 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

> Yesterday ended up so far above average (without the usage stats to support it)

That was my yesterday as well netmeg. Won't be enough to save January 2014 from being down a whopping 50% from the already low numbers of last month. Easily my worst AdSense month ever. Hopefully things will improve in February but if not, so what. I could care less anymore.

 6:58 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

I dunno. The level of invalid activity now really bugs me, but overall I passed January 2013 numbers last Friday, so if they chop too much off at the other end, I'm good.

 7:36 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

Compared to last January, earnings will probably be about the same. However, it's a step back because my CTR has fallen off significantly this month compared to the last 4 months. CTR is off 25% in large part to AdSense ad targeting, ad format testing and other factors. So in reality, I consider my earnings down 25% this month.

 10:20 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

Stats are whacked today. Clicks haven't moved for hours. Home page has a higher total for today than performance report. Have seen this before but this has been like this all day for the most part. The two reports are out of sync and with traffic creeping up to an all time high, the lack of clicks is purely incomprehensible. Recently, I've been seeing late-in-the day adjustments but usually before now. Pretty sure we're about to see something new at the plex (oh like direct ad sales now being promoted on the Adsense home page). Hmmmm, wonder what else is in store for us lab rats? Incomprehensible? I'd say so even if revenue this month is now 11 times better than last January. Just boggles the mind as CTR is way down for most days this month.

 10:29 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

And I'll make another observation here. Has anyone noticed that in the new Adsense home page, there is no CTR statistic on the page? In fact, it's now entirely an earnings report. Of course, there are other ways to get that info but I find it interesting that that stat is being pushed out of site as if they don't want us watching it too closely or as if they're not too proud about what that stat says about the state of Adsense.

 10:45 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

I thought the month started off bad enough, then the last 5 days have been horrid. Everything crashed.

 11:00 pm on Jan 28, 2014 (gmt 0)

Again today, some of the worst RPMs I have ever seen in the Adsense program. 30% of the RPM I would expect and 15% of the RPM that I would hope for.

Another month of this and I will be trialing other programs.

 12:00 am on Jan 29, 2014 (gmt 0)

Not sure if anyone actually reads what others are writing in this thread these days but right now Adsense and Gmail are hanging for me (e.g. sitting and spinning) which is another indication that a roll-out may be underway. Saw a little movement in revenue just before this started so some catching up may be in order soon (fingers crossed). This smoke and mirrors routine is getting old for sure.

Add to that: Google Fonts API is hanging as well.

Don't forget the bug in the ARC - instead of the % going up, it goes down to 1% and then stays there.

 12:21 am on Jan 30, 2014 (gmt 0)

Today, 3/4 through the day is the worst day I've ever had. Ctr unbelievably low and cpc prices pathetic. Only hope is that stats are majorally delayed.

 1:14 am on Jan 30, 2014 (gmt 0)

What a crazy month it's been and none of it in a good way. My stats have been weird since Jan. 1. My worst site now outperforms my best site for no apparent reason, unless it has something to do with the recent Google search update.

Each day things have been erratic with with long stretches of practically no earnings reports till evening. The invalid click activity I just can't get a hold of. Some days I think fifty percent of my clicks are removed. My sites are clean, I clearly separate my ads from content and I don't do any color blending, no drop down menus covering ads and I've been blocking all "Download" "Get the App" type of ads. I try to minimize any accidental clicks.

I did get a bump in my average CPC today. I think I'll close out this month 35% below Dec. 2013 which I guess is not too bad considering it was a holiday push month. Here's to February, hope things improve all around.

 2:45 am on Jan 30, 2014 (gmt 0)

Google sells off Motorola today after losing billions on the acquisition. Perhaps they started making up for the losses with their few profitable products; Adwords & AdSense.

 7:42 am on Jan 30, 2014 (gmt 0)

My RPM has been averaged almost the same amount the entire day (within about 5 or 10 cents). Many times I have checked and it has been much higher, then I have checked 10 minutes later and it has been back to normal again. How can this be statistically even possible to believe? Especially considering the different sites, countries, time zones etc. I am also seeming likely to be about 35% down on Dec 2013.
