adsense 404 page

 1:10 pm on Apr 23, 2013 (gmt 0)

All I can see on adsense.google.com is 404 error - not found page. Any idea why?

Cause that's not the proper URL?

For as long as I can remember adsense.google.com was how I reached AdSense. Now perhaps on some obscure blog Google announced they were retiring this URL (they don't usually have the decency to email announcements to users...), but the real point here is why?

If Ramone and I have even spent 30 seconds wondering why the URL wasn't working, that means thousands of users were.

Google advice to webmasters everywhere is to use a 301 redirect.

It looks like they have now fixed it - but it should never have happened in the first place.

Meta-question as long as we're here: Has anyone ever figured out how g### benefits by having such a spectacularly unhelpful 404 page?

For comparison purposes, That Other Search Engine says cheerily:
That web page doesn't exist.
Let's see if we can help you find what you are looking for.
{et cetera}

with search box and ordinary links bar along the top.

:: further investigation, with pause for maniacal laughter ::

Test #3 brings up the "Oops! I forgot to code for this possibility" blank page. (I name no names.)

Test #4 brings up generic nginx 404 page.

And the winner is...

duckduckgo, who responded to a request for
by showing a SERP for {garbage-text-here} :)

We now return to our regularly scheduled Forums.

HAH! They're redirecting it now...
