January 2011 Adsense earnings
Adsense earnings analysis -

 5:43 am on Jan 6, 2011 (gmt 0)

Hello Everyone: I ported the thread located here: [webmasterworld.com...]
as we were off topic in a few areas.

I'm highly interested in continuing the discussion about what other Publishers are seeing in 2011 with regard to their adsense earnings over years prior.

As I indicated, I noticed a substantial drop in earnings during the first few days of January 2011, after a record breaking December 2010.

Anyone noticing this trend is encouraged to share their feedback.

Husky, tell me how was the last 10 days of dec 2010 was for you? Was it Usual or slightly better or a festival bonanza?

A disaster zone, compared to the previous year I was -36.4% and that wasn't a stellar year, 2009 dropped as expected however this year's EPC was much to blame at -30% and it's fallen another 7.5% in the first 11 days of January and yesterday's was yet another -19.3% compared to January 1st-10th.

Compared to 2009 I'm -20.5% on overall earnings with +3.1% actual clicks...impressive stuff eh?

 11:52 am on Jan 12, 2011 (gmt 0)

yes there has been a decline in revenue per click this jan 2011 and in your case, there seem to be other issues as well since you are getting better traffic than before...

I strongly feel that wrong ads are being served on your site...If there is a way to notify google on this, it could be a good idea to approach them. But I am not sure whether there is one...

What I am seeing in the UK is spot on, others have sent me screen shots from various countries and they keep checking them and they are mostly 90% spot on as well even when not in the English language.

Mine is an EPC issue, it started to seriously decline in mid-December and, obviously, has never recovered and now I am beginning to wonder whether it ever will since I am now at my traditional averages of mostly 90~110% with occasionally 80~120% daily earnings but at 56% of 2010's.

 2:47 pm on Jan 12, 2011 (gmt 0)

Ever since black friday my ctr has been down 30%. Traffic is actually up 10% since then but revenue has been declining due to poor ctr.

I added some text links last month that has compensated for poor performing ad units. I think im gonna ad some more link units today. They seem to have helped a great deal on the pages I placed them on, especially when you place them in paragraphs towards the top of the page and to the left. I also tried that catagory filtering yesterday and blocked all of them that were unrelated to my site.

I also think im gonna try that pay per call program. I found a couple that could really enchance my site because I dont offer any type of phone numbers for support since i run a info site, however Im gonna make them text ads without using their banners if they let me. Has anyone tried the ppc program yet?

Doing better today. Have already surpassed yesterday with eleven hours to go. Hope the upswing continues!

 9:25 pm on Jan 12, 2011 (gmt 0)

@Play_Bach: me too. I didnt want to post anything because I am a little superstitious! lol! However, today I am doing better than the previous 11 days. Traffic is up as well as adsense which is still far from september-december cpc. I still have 10 hours to go...let's see what happens! I hope this will hold!

 9:43 am on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

Yesterday closed just up enough to be the highest earning day all month. Still off by nearly 2/3 of what I used to make, but at least it's moving in the right direction again. Yay.

 2:57 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

Yesterday just made my minimum daily target however today I have a total collapse, 0.01~0.05 all over the place. This does not bode very well at all.

 3:57 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

Today it's really low. Our eCPM is 50% lower compared to yesterday ad yesterday we were about 40% lower compared to 2010 eCPM. This is really starting to become a monopoly and the only winner is the Big G.

 4:09 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

I didn't hit minimum yesterday (just missed it) but today looks like everything is way back down again.

 6:20 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

On my main trade directory site I've just removed sitewide AdLinks since they have achieved only 33% of 2010's average and replaced a skyscraper with one of my own ads.

My best performing EPC url channel is still my best and so far down "only" 25% and its a photo gallery...this is madness!

 8:11 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

Has anyone who had a consult with the Google optimization team a few months contacted the person they talked to about this? I am thinking about it, although I'd like to give this a little more time to see if things return to normal on their own.

 9:29 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

Europe here: yesterday cpc was up all day. Still far from sept-dec cpc avg. However I don't complained. Today it is up again. The same level as yesterday. The interesting thing is that for the whole morning (middle europe time) cpc avg was very low. In the afternoon started to climb up.

it looks like european advertisers dont have a lot of money...

 9:49 pm on Jan 13, 2011 (gmt 0)

Europe is expecting a rough 2011 and traditionally advertising budgets are starting in February-March...

 12:14 am on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

It's just gone midnight, and what I have earnt so far, I would normally earn by midday. It sucks.

 12:16 am on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

It simply gets worse and worse, my best url channel that was 25% down with its EPC is today 50% down. Surely the press are going to pick up on this collapse that many are having, and I qualify the many by the sheer volume of posts across a of lot forum boards.

 1:20 am on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Looks like it'll be closing as another low AdSense day here too. :-(

 7:25 am on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

its 11:22pm (PST) and I think I made myself mad today clicking refresh on the adsense page. I think its time to go to bed and hope things get a little better tomorrow. Today was one of our worst days. Right next to MayDay except its all ecpm this time.

 8:38 am on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Can't believe it.
January - Feb should be one of the best periods of the year for me normally. Yet so far this year my January earnings averages are well below the slowest average for previous years.

 10:48 am on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Thursday was 42% below my monthly minimum target, absolutely pathetic and with an eCPM that's nearly flatlining however so far this morning, and I wonder how long this will last, my EPC looks normal!

Something is evidently well and truly screwed-up.

 12:48 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

I started having problems in November. One thing I think I noticed in Webmaster Tools; I believe Google's concept of keywords for my sites changed significantly. Of course this is hard to research.

Site keywords may or may not affect your traffic and they also may or may not affect your "smart pricing".

I believe Google's keyword evaluation for a domain has some type of time averaging calculation in it as well. So the impact of Google's keyword algo change could be spread over a large period of time.

So if you have a good memory:
Have your site's keywords changed significantly in the past several months as reported by Webmaster Tools?

 2:59 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

One thing I like to do just as a matter of course for any site I'm working with (whether it's mine or a client's) is to use the Google AdWords Keyword tool to punch in a URL from my site, and see what Google thinks the page is about. If they don't come up with the appropriate keywords, then I know I need to do some tweaking, both for Google's sake and probably for users too. On the AdSense side, if Google's not figuring out my page correctly, possibly they won't be showing me the best targeted ads. At any rate, it's free and can't hurt.

Here's the tool:

(it's not clickable because WebmasterWorld doesn't let you post https links)

Here's the tool:
Not for IE6 users. :(

 3:38 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

It works in Firefox.

 4:38 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Keyword tool [adwords.google.com]

Just leave out the 's' from https and Google will redirect you properly and the link works here too.

 7:26 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Nearing the 1/2 day mark here. Earnings look bleak.

 8:15 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Is it me or are the stats delayed? My Page Impressions seem very low in comparison to my logs.

 10:19 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Hope European advertisers will start to work after 15 jan (or 17 )
I have no idea about US advertisers.

 10:32 pm on Jan 14, 2011 (gmt 0)

Thanks Netmeg. Great idea.

Horrible day. With MLK weekend it will probably get worse. Brace yourselves!

 12:17 am on Jan 15, 2011 (gmt 0)

Just two gulps away from second pint at the local pub. Feeling "better" already... :-|

Feeling better already

But can you afford it? Back to writing content! ;)

January has been a weak month so far and today is just atrocious. Been in a funk since Thanksgivings.
