ASA: What are theTop 5 Publisher Requests?
Bddmed

msg:3790004

From another thread here: [webmasterworld.com...]

I'll make you a deal: if you all, the members of the AdSense WebmasterWorld forum, can agree on your top 5 asks in order of priority, I will personally email the Director of Product Management for all AdSense products with your list.

So lets get it started.

If someone (le't say someone from google) wanted to show publishers what it's like to try to develop and offer features that would please publishers, how could you structure an exercise to allow us to experience said challenge?

Ahhh....a tried and true management/training/group facilitation technique.

Google could easily send out an email to all publishers asking them to take a poll. We then go to an online poll in which we are presented with 10, 20, 30, or however many choices of publisher requests. The poll allows us to pick 5 that we want the most. Google then has a top 5 most requested list. (And yes, they can include a disclaimer that we aren't guaranteed to actually "receive" these requests in the future).

That's a good suggestion.

Google has been using publisher surveys for a long time. I'd assume that some surveys involve random samples of the publisher population, while others may involve random samples of publishers who meet certain criteria (e.g., geographic, earnings levels, type of content, etc.)

Nope, it wouldn't work.

It's fine to suggest that users on a website come up with a list, but if they come up with a poll for all users, then they better be willing to implement every option on that list if they win the poll.

People are too used to the idea of "democracy" and they would be too disappointed if the "vote" won for an issue, but wasn't implemented by the "dictator".

Maybe we can't all agree on five features to request, but we can hold a vote to decide the number one feature on the list.
Hold the vote for say three days to get as many as opinions as possible.
Then vote for a second time to get elect the second feature to the request list, and so on for the remaining three.
Start a new thread for each round of voting to get maximum attention.

1.

Pre-approval of advertisers by ad content, not company, advetiser account number or url. This is the type of control I have at Casale Media. I like it. The advertiser decides if they want to be seen on my site, and I decide if I want them to show their ad, by ad content. I think it is the best possible solution, and most closely matches the same publisher goals as "in-house ads". Then, you can elect to turn on "auto approval" or to keep total control over what ads are shown on your site, on an ad by ad basis, with a known revenue unit, in advance of placement.

This would come in handy in such an example.

Let's say I like a certain lingerie company's ads and the earnings they produce. So, I would not block them or their pages. But, in the course of their website, they begin to sell the purple pill. The two product lines are somewhat related, so it is somewhat likely a company might diversify to that line.

Since I loathe these ads, I wouldn't want them to be shown on my site, but I like the the ctr and cpc I get from the company in general.

I can try to block by keyword, in theory, but there are so many ways to word the ad, using thousands of words, it could become a big headache to stay ahead of the changing ads and keep them blocked. Also, they could change the landing pages daily, and I would always be playing catch up, if I block by url. If I can pre-approve the ads, then all the lingerie ads would come through, but the purple pill ads would not.

It makes it easy, and I do not have to spend my entire day managing ads. I can go through a list of those advertisers who have chosen my site, look at their ads, click, click, click, save, done. I am in and out in 5 minutes.

2.

Please get rid of "Smart Pricing" Even though I've good content and a 6 years old site I've been smart priced and MFA sites in the same niche might be making more money than me. It doesn't make sense - the algorithm simply doesn't work well - Especially with international sites. Our sites are being sold for .01 a click & its just not fair.

Extend the Ad Review center to include CPC ads so that we can view and approve CPC ads without using the preview tool.
We could use the same options that are presently available for targeted ads to block a single ad or all ads by a specific advertiser.
It should also allow us to report fraudulent or illegal ads that slip by the Adwords monitoring system.
Optionally it would allow us to rate ads to provide input to the Adwords quality score.

Thanks for that juicy tidbit, feel free to throw us a few more.

ASA, please see if you can dive into your AdWords team discussions and fish out some more pointers and tips for the content network.

OK. Will do. Here's an easy one: use the top 3 ad formats [google.com].

In other words, give advertisers the inventory they want most.

Yesterday I was searching for something and was actually using Google ads from one specific site that had loads of relevant product ads to find what I was looking for.

There's nothing new in that I suppose however the MOST frustrating thing was having to back button through each site to get back to the ads.

Yes, I know I could right click and open the ads in a new window however what would the publisher earn from that? I assume nothing. That made me think I wonder how many users right click and the publisher earns nothing?

Therefore please add me to:

Umm, no - as far as i know, a right click to open a new tab for the lnk will still register as a click.
Think about it - to get the new page to load, you have to go through the pagead2.googlesyndication.com URl, and thats where they record the click.
So - no worries, right click away :)

I've an easy one for ASA:

The "recent" messages: can we please be allowed to delete them ? It's a waste of screen space.

My most recent one is from June 2007, a "Optimization Report" (that's when I managed to get them to stop).

Adding a delete button doesn't seem to be rocket science.

Another easy one: the UI is annoying when switching between adsense for search and adsense for content reports: it wipes out the selected date range and switches to "today". Entering a date range is a lot of clicks, please preserve them, (switching to today is easy in the UI)

Add to that that "today" is utterly useless to me: I've no idea when it was generated so I try not to look at it as I'll only draw the wrong conclusions anyway.
