The $1000 Jinx

I've been running Adsense on basically four main sites since April. Since then I've been hovering around the $800 to $900 per month mark. A few months ago I came really close to $1000, with a final total for the month of $991.86.

I knew it was going to be close when I went to sleep last night, but when I woke up this morning, what do you think I saw as a total for August?

$999.88!

I missed it by 12 cents!

Darn the $1000 jinx!

Pluck the feathers of an orphan chicken, make a pillow out of the feathers (have to be an odd number), soak the pillow in the tears of depressed owl, then put it under the window of a virgin maiden, worked for me except the last item which was almost impossible to find.

It's not a jinx. Google keeps very detailed records of how we behaved in our past lives. Clearly, at some point in history, you were evil.

No worries, you probably broke the mark, only that 13 cent click was deemed invalid. Better luck this month.

If you strictly working on organic listings start an Adwords campaign, you'll go over.

I can only squeeze-out 3,000 uniques (per day) out of my SERPS, with Adwords I can double that.

You just need that one little push. Almost $1000. Not bad for four websites. Some have hundreds of website to get that high.

Carefull what you wish for. I went over the 1000 dollar barrier in Dec 2004 and then disappeared from Google SERPS.

Hobbs andd Carguy;

Stop giving away the store! How are we gonna keep members around if you two are giving away the darkest secrets at the drop of a hat?

If it takes someone hundreds of sites to do that.... they are doing hundreds of things wrong. Like low quality pages and/or scrapers.

LOL, I predict you will reach above and beyond your mark within the coming months when the weather cools down and folks stop spending so much time outside. Have faith and don't reach for the chicken feathers just yet!

In mentioning the above, I forgot to point out that my AdSense rep wiped all of my past lives records clean as soon as my site reached 500 million page views per month.

Thats when you those one cent clicks come in handy. You will shurely reach it in sept, especially after labor day, back to work, school, etc. Aug was my worst in last 7 months.

Maybe some of your clicks ended up in my account. I finished the month with just over $1000. =)

the short cut is to chant "el-gooG!el-gooG! skcilc gib emmiG" 10 minutes a day!

$999.88!

Look at it another way. The median annual household income in the U.S. is about $46,000. That includes a lot of households where husband and wife each get up every morning and trudge off to a job for an ungrateful boss.

Every week, Monday through Friday, they get up, kiss each other goodbye and it's back to the old slave ship.

In August, just by having some web pages published and putting a little code on those pages, you made what they do in an entire week's of toiling away.

Feel better now?

FarmBoy

But times are getting better with advertisers paying more money.

Andrew - you make this sound like easy money.
I'm lucky enough to have broken through the $1000 dollars - but I've put in more than 700 hours to do it! I've never worked longer hours in my life as have have over the past 2 months.
Guess I'm doing it wrong.

nope... you're not doing it wrong.
i've put in long, hard hours on my site too. and i definitely know it's not "easy money".

BUT

compared to my previous job as a web & multimedia developer working 12 - 14 hour days, doing the job of 3 people, this IS peanuts!

I have another jinx, I can't break the $10 in one day mark in last 4 days I got 3 days over $9 but just cant seem to do it :P

you WILL! i was like that too. then one fine day, it happened. then it happened again and again and again. it WILL happen!

just repeat the chant "el-gooG!el-gooG! skcilc gib emmiG" ;)

Also waiting for the first day with 1.000 visits but not really woried as long as I am making nice profit with really not that much work.

so sad!

I, on the other hand, finally finished over $1,000! :) Very happy today, I've been with AdSense since April of '05. I'm running 1 hobby website.

On June 27th i got hit by the GOOGLE SERPs bug where 95% of the site disappeared from GOOGLE for exactly 30 days. All came back on July 27th, even stronger. So July was really bad, just over $600. June was about $850, so I was expecting July to take over 1K, but it wasn't in the cards.

COULD have been even more, but the site was taken down by my host for 2 days this month because of a trademark issue.

How's this for adding insult to injury? I just looked at my August stats again. The $999.88 was for Adense for Content. But it turns out I also had a referral click. Can you guess what my total August payment is?

$999.99!

I'm not complaining, but gee! One cheapest click away from breaking the jinx!
