Two and a half months in I'm seeing no improvement.
If your site is super-big or super-difficult to crawl, it may take several weeks for you to "recover" from this update. Google has said it would have to crawl a significant number of improved pages to have a clear "signal" that you have indeed improved the layout. See: [googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk...]
Also, there is an indication that ads might not be the only culprit. You have to check your site on different screen sizes with different browsers and make sure visitors see enough of your content to be compelled to stay on the page.

@deadsea I have this same problem. My site has been hit strongly 6th February - I lost 2/3 search traffic. I had then only 1 ad above the fold (but all 4 ads codes was at the top so googlebot could understood this that all ads on my website are on top) so its very incomprehensible for my. I deleted all the ads 14th February and to this day there is no result. My friend's site also has benn hit then and also no recovery. Maybe Google team forgot refresh this algoritm?
