Webmaster tools crawl/submit Not working - giving error for hours

 3:49 am on Jan 18, 2014 (gmt 0)

Been trying to "Crawl as Googlebot" and submit for hours now. It gives success on the crawl, but every time I try to submit the page it comes up with a red-bar error:
"An error occurred. Please try again in a few minutes."
Usually when I get this it comes back in a few minutes. Broken again...

Have you had any chance in crawl/submit since posting the above or is it still broken?

I used it successfully on several submissions forcing Google to attempt to crawl 410 Gone pages. Googlebot crawled the page and received the 410 Gone code.

I was surprised recently when I submitted a new page this way and it was indexed in less than an hour. I wonder though if this may not be a good idea. Perhaps Google should find pages "naturally".

I think, as I finally noticed hours later, that it MIGHT have been due to the fact that the second box which comes up and asks if you want URL or URL PLUS all linked pages USED to default to URL only. Now it recently started to default to NO selection. If you click submit with neither selected, it pops up this cryptic error.

We apparently have a relatively very trusted site. We literally get things indexed and re-indexed within 45 seconds consistently. If we don't submit it ASAP, other sites steal our content and quickly try to submit and claim it as their own.

@MikeNoLastName - thanks for your solution... it worked - simple fix, yet I hadn't noticed the change, and was trying over and over for days - ack!
