Webmaster Tools wants secondary verification of my ownership

 7:26 pm on Nov 16, 2013 (gmt 0)

I only have webmaster tools for one of my sites, and only check it about once a week or so. Today when I checked it, at first I thought it was just being buggy, because when I clicked "Security Issues", a message appeared saying that I don't have authorization to see that page. But then when I clicked "Search Queries", a message said "You are not a verified owner of this site. VERIFY NOW", even though I verified my ownership years ago. Anyway, I clicked "VERIFY NOW" and got the following message:

You are already a verified owner of [this domain]. Verifying with more than one method will make your ownership more resilient.

Verification methods:

Domain name provider
Sign in to your domain name provider.

HTML tag
Add a meta tag to your site's home page.

Google Analytics
Use your Google Analytics account.

Google Tag Manager
Use your Google Tag Manager account.

HTML file upload
Already verified using this method.
. . . . . . . . .

So the messages aeem contradictory, but apparently the gist is that Google wants me to verify my ownership by a second method.

I don't have Analytics for this site, and never heard of "Tag Manager". Anyway, I haven't decided what to do yet, but am wondering if anyone else has encountered this.

..because when I clicked "Security Issues", a message appeared saying that I don't have authorization to see that page..

I haven't seen this but I can think of a reason why Google might have given you this message. For example, were you logged into Google on two different browsers at the same time? Or accessing Google services logged in from two different locations (or used proxy) at the same time or in the very short period of time where it would be impossible to travel from one location to another within that time?

Alternatively, something else happened with your site that was identified by Google as security issue and hence it wants secondary verification.

Have you got another Google logon which you can use to verify this site and perhaps see what the "Security issue" is? Or re-verify by uploading home page with the meta-tag?

Thanks for your reply. I just checked again and now it's letting me see anything I want. For security issues, it says :
"We haven't detected any security issues on your site. If you need more information on security issues related to your site, please review our resources for hacked sites."

As far as i know, when I checked before I wasn't signed in in another browser. I have a tablet in another room but am pretty sure that it was turned off. Anyway, I don't want to do anything about it right now, so will wait and see if it happens again. The message said that the purpose was to make my ownership more "resilient", whatever that means.

It could be WMT glitch. But I would suggest you check verified owners section of WMT just in case, to make sure you are the only one.

I travel a bit and I know that when logging in to WMT from a different country, I get security questions asked, but this is before it even lets me into WMT.

Well I appear to be the only verified owner and user. So I'm not going to worry about it anymore. If it happens again, I'll probably just add a meta-tag to the home page, as you suggested.
