Canonical for similar pages

Msg#: 4598710 posted 10:26 am on Aug 2, 2013 (gmt 0)

I have a product on my eCommerce site that has three separate pages. They are quite similar except the title denotes different sizes. A quick check shows me two of the three pages show up in the top 15 (8 and 15) for the pertinent keyword. Would there be any benefit to adding canonical tags to the two lowest ranking pages that point to the best ranking one? I'm wondering if doing this might help me get in the top five or better. Thanks for any tips.

The canonical tag is a suggestion that Google doesn't always obey so for that reason I would try to consolidate similar pages onto one url if possible, and then 301 redirect the other two pages.

You don't necessarily need to change the layout of the page to accomplish this, you can replace the link to the other pages with a link to an expanding div containing the content on the same page.
