Hi just entered google webmastertool and I saw I lost today about 80% of my backlinks.
Has this happened to anybody else?
My ranking looks like it has not changed, however less traffic than yesterday.

Having a closer look,
the links that disappeared are all to the homepage and all to my swedish homepage, could be more innerpages, dont know. But have none to those.
However the pages are where they were before. I dont get this, I know the swedish have 84 links from one domain, but they are natural and related.

Didn't the same thing happen to someone else a month or two back? In my case I was hoping the links would stay gone but no luck, they all came back within a couple of weeks.

I think its a bit scary,
thought was an update, but as affecting only some pages....

I too lost 80% of my backlinks today in WMT but there was no change in traffic so hopefully this is just a temporary bug.

I noticed the same thing, I lost about 60% of my backlinks in my WMT. Does someone know what might be the reason for that?

Quite a few links have disappeared from WMT here too.

The ones that remain look like they may be the more trusted ones? Is there anything we can learn from comparing the current output against previous, more complete lists?

Links to my website homepage have disappeared too. The numbers bounce around so much it is hard to take the back link numbers very seriously. I am sure they will come back in a week or two.

< moved from another location >

I am seeing changes in Google webmaster tools "Links to your site" section over last 3-4 days.

Primarily the homepage and other important pages of the website have disappeared from "Links to your website" section and the reported Links have dropped by 70%.

Could this be a flaw on Google's end or are others too facing this issue?

I'm seeing the same thing. Interestingly, not every site has the issue.

I have also seen that all the links to my homepage have disappeared.

I remembered this happening before, in February...here's the reference:

[seroundtable.com...]

Last time Google said it was just a reporting bug, and had no effect on anything else.

This time around with me its not only the homepage. Several other landing pages too have disappeared. Could this be due to use of disavow links?

According to WMT I have lost around 50% of links to one of my sites. This particular site has been having server or access issues so this looks to me like a loss of trust - not a good sign.

Thanks, rish, I wouldn't have thought to look that far back.

Has anyone seen the same thing happen both times-- February and now?

I tend to think "links to your site" is another of those areas like the keyword list that's created purely for wmt and has no relationship to anything happening in the rest of google. So every time they shut down the computer to clean out the dust mice and broken bits of paper clips, there's a transitory downward-hiccup in some people's numbers.

I also had a look and all links leading to home page have disappeared from WMT and the home page does not feature in the list of pages being linked to.

I am pretty certain this is a WMT bug.

Now, if most of your inbound links go to home page, this will result in huge "loss" of links being reported in WMT.

Do you guys still see links are missing from WMT? In my profile now even more links are gone. I had about 20,000, until a few days it showed 11,000 and now 600!

Yes, all links to the homepage are missing but Ive also noticed I have no referral traffic to the homepage either...so maybe its more than a WMT bug?

Nothing wrong with the referral traffic though. Its only the webmaster tools links data that has disappeared. Any signs of recovery?

For the record, here's our thread on the topic Anybody lost a ton of link data in Webmaster Tools? [webmasterworld.com]

On the previous occasion it was a bug in the reporting, however, if you have lost traffic it may be an additional issue, and not a bug.

My links are fine, but my content keywords show terms no longer anywhere on the site. It's as if WMT is using an old content keyword database for some reason. Anyone else seeing this?

Anyway still see missing links from WMT?
I know this happened before in February but for how long did you, Webmasters, notice it back them missing for? The longer it is the stranger it gets.

Maybe everyone everywhere is deleting links left right and centre because of the google hype? Doubt it but I can see more and more sites deleting links just to be safe?

msg:4586099

Could be but it still does not explain it. Also I dont think deleting links is a fix unless you have a note in WMT for unnatural links.
