The almighty Google went down to a PR9

The hacker group I have been tracking made out amazingly well this time around. They are making millions off of selling pagerank from the sites they hacked by pointing hidden links to their sites. Their sites are just one less than Google's PR 9.

Wow...my site is a PR 8, I'm a beast. I will outrank everyone in the serps now! LOL.

Can I buy a link fr... Just kidding.

Well, I have a 12th level Cleric with a +5 Shield.
Let's remember "Page" Rank was names after Larry Page, and the people who probably love him most about now are the people involved in the black market of buying and selling pagerank. Sorry to rant, but I just haven't seen this level of manipulation and black market sales in the 10+ years I have been doing this.

My main site went from a PR 5 to PR 6 this last week.
We had been PR6 pre Panda.
Then to recover from Panda, I moved a bunch of content to sub directories and we dropped to PR 5 and have been there ever since.
So no matter what people say, I like bragging that I have a PR 6 site. Makes me feel good, even if it doesn't mean much.

I'm not sure.
2:19 pm on Feb 6, 2013 (gmt 0)
adobe, nasa, w3.org and apple also dropped to PR9.
The only PR10 left I see is firstgov.gov

a former taxi driver with a pr9 site. amazing.
no black hat either. more amazing.
Just wish I could eat it.
Thinking of charging websites $5 to link to me. ;)

well, what's in it aside from the black market?
is it like people believe in alexa stats? that kind of dumb marketing stuff?

My site was PR 5, now is unranked. Traffic has halved since the beginning of February. I suppose things should be back to normal by themselves, or should I contact Google?
8:57 pm on Feb 7, 2013 (gmt 0)
If your site's main page shows no PageRank in the Toolbar and it coincides with a fall in rankings/traffic, it's a strong sign that your site has been penalized. You should definitely review your site's compliance with Google's Guidelines (especially the Quality Guidelines), and see if there are things you're doing wrong or which might be seen as a violation, even if unintended. Then remove anything that might be a problem and file a Reconsideration Request that mentions those changes.
10:03 pm on Feb 7, 2013 (gmt 0)
But I haven't changed anything on the site and it has been ok for years. I have never had any issues with Google. This is really weird.
10:07 pm on Feb 7, 2013 (gmt 0)
BTW, is there a way to contact Google and ask what the problem is?
10:12 pm on Feb 7, 2013 (gmt 0)
Scooter24, your best bet maybe to look in your webmaster tools account with Google. If you do not have 1, make an account and then if they give you no guidance there, get a objective third person expert opinion about your site.Make any recommended changes and then submit a reinclusion request.

In fact I just did that (discovering in the process the webmaster tools, quite interesting). Maybe I found the problem: 7 messages since the beginning of January about ncrease in authorization permission errors
"... Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs we were blocked from crawling due to authorization permission errors. ..."
Turns out that Googlebot disregarded my robots.txt at the end of December and hit a bot trap, triggering an entry into my .htaccess deny from list. As a result Googlebot was 403-blocked from crawling my pages.
Over the course of January more and more pages became inaccessible to Google. I think I've now fixed the problem.

Well done! :D
Seriously, does page rank really have any meaning anymore, and if so, what is it? I went to a meeting recently where someone insisted it's still the be-all end-all, but it feels to me that while links are still very important, the algo's encompassing more and more other metrics all the time, which has to devalue links somewhat eventually.
