What happened on Dec 10th 2012?

Lots of webmasters, myself included, took a big hit by google on that day. I've tried to look back at all the Penguin and Panda updates but there is no mention of either of them on that date?

Anyone have any ideas on what kind of update it was?

do you remember what time it was specifically Mopek? We were 950'd around 3am UK time on 11th...did your ranks go to the end of results for many of your phrases - it would be worth finding out whether our hit was exclusive to us or if it was an algo push of some kind.

It was around 10pm eastern standard time (New York).

Lots of other webmasters got hit around the same time. See this thread:

[webmasterworld.com...] and scroll down to Dec 10th.

Google's been doing this for a while now to give big buisnesses a boost at Christmas time. Normally you'd have to really analyze the data to notice but Google didn't even bother hiding it. I wonder if they're even going to bother removing it, just sneak in a permanent change under the radar.

I've been saying for years now, do not put all your eggs in the Google basket, whether it be Adsense or relying on visitors from Search. They will screw you over if you are not a major player. The internet is moving towards big business just like brick and mortar stores and Google is leading the charge.

No I didn't go 950 but took an 80% drop .... it actually could be more like a 95% drop since most of the google traffic I get now are people searching for my brand. I have lots of pages with lots of different keywords within the site's theme (different articles; content) and most of them stopped getting traffic.

And StoutFlies: I know people have been saying the same thing about google you have but they have most of the traffic. Getting it elsewhere will cost a lot and may not be profitable ... or .... be so time consuming without getting a profitable return on your time.

have you looked to see if the pages are at the end of results, 95% drop would suggest so? If you can find some, we can pretty much nail this potential update to an over-optimisation algorithm dial turn on this date.

Trouble is I had so many pages with so many different queries that changed daily and even hourly so it was hard to nail anything down. Oddly enough the month before google gave me a huge boost and then smacked me down.

no one was hit. Google forced https search on chrome and firefox so they do not see the keyword traffic is all. check "non provided" traffic and the majority would be using their own internal tracking system i bet.

Speed shoppping: I guess it could be an over-optimization penalty. I'll change anchors to look more "natural" and get rid of some of my built up links from the months before December 10th and if I get any change I'll report back.

yeh, we are looking in a similar area, also trying to reverse engineer by trying to send a remaining ranking page to 950 by similar means.

Much of the link building was unintentional - just building other domains using datafeeds for products and having links to other sites in the same niche there.

I also have links pointing to my sites from other sources beyond my control that I never asked for and look like they could be 'seen' as spammy but were probbaly made for other reasons. I'll have to hunt them down too and try to get them to remove my links.

Are your rankings gone or is it just traffic? if Traffic read my previous post.

Both ... my bandwidth is down, my internal tracking shows less traffic, my analytics shows less traffic and my host shows the same.

OK, so your bandwidth is down is a concern then and is likely something else. For everyone else check your not provided traffic (you should see an increase on the 10th). Must be a link problem.
