OK, they actually had some images of European maps, but they do included a nice little map of our big city downtown here in the midwest USA, along with listings for 7 - 8 local restaurants!
That would be very helpful if I was planning a trip to Europe.... sigh

Whatever started last Wedneday PM for us has really hit hard. SERP's look exactly the same yet conversions have all but gone. Our first ZERO DAY in months yesterday.
7:07 am on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
On latefriday - early saturday we also got kicked. 90% off. I dont know the reason whether it is panda or penguin. Traffic decreased to all product pages.

@ohno probably Google shopping.. isn't that supposed to have fired last week?
7:54 am on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
Yes that was on the 17th IIRC but that is supposed to be USA only? We are UK. Unless of course Google have managed to mess that up too, wouldn't surprise me seeing as we get more foreign traffic than UK at times!
11:57 am on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
Wow okay we've moved up from #8 to #5 in the US for our main term, yet now the traffic is all but obliterated; go figure.

we are #1 for a very competitive term in germany. Estimated search a month 800.000 based on adsense keyword tool. Guess what. We do not get any traffic from this one also when i am searching we are always in #1.

are you logged into your google account when you search, are you using firefox browser, both these things effect your search results and google will push websites you view most to the top of search, meaning your site will be number 1, log out and search again

I've tried all methods & we appear to rank great yet we have on/off periods in a VERY big way.
1:15 pm on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
I don't get it. I have removed unnatural backlinks and I'm keeping my backlink profile perfect. Now I'm losing positions to other sites - big brands - who do extensive crosslinking between their own sites (separate domain for each language version). I am also seeing 2 to 3 month old domains ranking #1 for big money terms with auto-generated spammy links. And surviving all Panda/Penguin refreshes. Nothing seems to have change since the beginning of 2012. Backlinks still count - and spammy links work.

firefox, IE, chrome, not logged in, cache empty, different PCs, mobile devices, different IPs and locations, everytime #1
The nice thing is, that I made up a adwords campaign last week for this term and the adwords campaing was runing very good for this term and my money was also running through my hands into andwords.
1:25 pm on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
Also don't forget that the google toolbar skews results as well. Best way to get a look at where you are is use a browser that has no google plugins, is not signed in to google, has no stored cookies or cache and is rebooted after clearing cookies / cache.

Without wishing to sound like a stuck record that isn't how your customers see the SERPs though is it? Monitoring the SERPs is next to impossible these days IMO. You can get a feel on what is going on but it is impossible to know what your customers see for a given search term.(although even with SSL search you can get the search position but not the search term used to see that position).
1:34 pm on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
Yes but your customers don't spend part of every day searching for the same results (like we do to see where we are). :)
If you use statcounter it tells you in what positions the clickee found you at.

Got something similar and makes it even more puzzling, according to that info we DO rank really well. So how can one day be so different to the next? Edited to add, although that tells us what position WE are at it doesn't tell us who else was on the SERPs page for the search term. I think that is the important bit........(hence Google blocking the search terms).
2:09 pm on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
Use the Adwords preview tool. It allows you to see the serps anywhere in the world, without personalisation. Here it is:

also we would not be on #1 for some/many users we should be a least on the #1 page and get a little traffic with this term.
My guess is that google has made itself so unalluring for not giving good alternatives to amazon/ebay/brands that poeple are directly going to amazon/ebay and use google less.
Why should they search for widgets on google when all they find is amazon/ebay. They go directly to this platforms.
Big goog is killing itself by smalling and shriveling the serps to a point where no users is willing to get through.
Just make a search for "+bing" ( mods i hope it is ok ). You will get a first the mobile searchsite from bing?! And then nothing about bing anymore!

I am seeing very odd fluctuations in positioning over the weekend...from page three back to #2 where I was before, then today back to page three. Google dropped my site to page three (and still falling) for some terms I was in top 5 for years. There is simply no way that the hordes of junk sites that are ranking ahead of me now are better in any way. So I assume I've been hit by a penalty of some sort. Not an exact match domain and no WMT spammy links warnings of any kind. I have noticed that the pages which have dropped also have a (Google) rewritten page title, while the pages which survived have kept their own title. Only thing I can see is perhaps a big penalty for duplicate content now, or perhaps lack of freshness? All kinds of new sites have taken over the top spots and most of them are blogs or feed content that is updated daily. More 'static' sites that don't accumulate as many links or social media followers are gone. Both my top competitors moved up actually, and are now consistently in top 5...both have older wordpress blogs.

Another slow starting week. I've noticed my Yahoo and Bing referrals are way up, to nearly 50%, Google is dropping fast. Same situation here, serps "look" ok (signed out, no plugins) yet Google traffic is few & far between. I'm not even worried about conversions anymore, we need traffic first.
One other anomaly in GA, a little over a week ago, my 30 day traffic trend was + 5% (the green/red text next to your selected account when logging into GA) a day later it was 56% and a day after that it's 100% in the green. HOWEVER, when you look at the chart, it's dead flat. Today it's showing + 102%. It's just another clear indication that either I'm misinterpreting the obvious or Google Analytics is broken.
BTW, Piwik does not concur with GA's cheery assessment of my traffic trend.

Do you have duplicate content on your site and/or is your content appearing on other sites?

I'm seeing the same thing for us as well.
However we just did a basic redesign of our product pages... which are converting much better than the old ones so I'm not sure if Googles now confused or what. We went with a more stylesheet approach to layout and a larger main graphic and more product information.. not just the description but really defining exact measurements etc...
Sales are up yet traffic is down. Maybe Google is sending us more targeted traffic? Sure hope so.... I'll be watching our bounce rate much more closely this week.
6:03 pm on Oct 22, 2012 (gmt 0)
Google hits are almost give here too. Bing and yahoo has taken over but doesn't give as much visitors. No hits on inner pages at all from google. 950 penalty still in effect.

@bewenched - I haven't done any redsign lately. One day we can be banging out sales, the next day zip. It's pretty obvious where the all of our common problems lie.
If I check our keyphrases for October of last year to this year, we have less than half the phrases and a HUGE magnification of a single blog article I wrote in 2007 on the control of a specific insect, which may be interesting, but not directly related to my niche. Google seems to have placed that one 5 year old article in front of my entire site.
One other observation...in looking at my AWSTATS program in cpanel, I see a huge drop on 10/19 of my per day "Pages" stat. Last week was averaging 250k pages per day...then on the 19th it dropped to 64k and is holding at that lower level. Strangely my daily "Number of visits", "Hits" and "Bandwidth" have remain unaffected.

Just click on "reply to this topic" at the bottom of the page, and on the page that follows it will show a quote feature you can use. The quote feature will show you how to format the tags for use with "Quick Reply". ;]
I couldn't show you myself, else it would have created just an empty box.

@Kevmark - thanks for the confirmation. I knew someone else would notice this problem. I'll bet if others look at their analytics account selection page, they may see the same. What is G trying to do? paint a happy face on this big box of of BS for us?
I'd be very interested if some of the GA gurus out there could explain why my trend is +102 yet my GA traffic trend GRAPH is basically flat line.

@Kevmark & @backdraft7: I am getting the same thing as you guys. Over 100% increase at the "Show Visits (last 30 days)" but traffic is still the same.
I posted this question at the Website Analytics section but haven't got a reply after a few days.

Re:the GA anomaly, two domains showing over 100% increase over the last 30 days(+102% & +104%). Yet I've been keeping a written record of visits, sales & revenue for every day since September 9th-it's flat! Probably just another data glitch but really makes you wonder whether the ranking algo has these same glitches!
7:05 am on Oct 23, 2012 (gmt 0)
I'm showing a GA of 88% increase. Which is a complete fantasy figure. I wish it was 88% increase. I would get a good feeling from that. The reality is that this number in GA busted.

if google now relies on this data for ranking purposes then guess what will GA show for the brands! 500% increase?
Our weatherreport: till today 8 am traffic was quiet well, then switch turned off.
Meanwhile passed through queries heading towards ZERO.
One query that we had yesterday and have been on #1 sees us now at #16. What a jump! How can an algo change a position so much?
