Google Updates and SERP Changes - June 2012

 3:40 am on Jun 1, 2012 (gmt 0)

< continued from [webmasterworld.com...] >

Traffic from G is down by 30% over this month. 20% from Knowledge Graph day and 10% from Panda.

I changed the site from being static width to fluid width (CSS changes only). I did that around Mid-May. Also moved the members section to a subdomain last week.

Other than that, I've just been adding content to pages which needed it.

Is it even possible that the fluid width change (was originally 990 width) would cause a Panda smack?

My main terms are still the same (although, none are #1 since they lost that ranking in January). It's the terms which usually get 1 or 2 hits which completely disappeared. That made up a big chunk of traffic.

My search rankings are up across the board since last month. I am only one of 2 sites providing original data but was often several pages deep in the search results because I ignored SEO almost entirely. I did add individual titles to pages a couple of months ago but havent done anything else.

Traffic is basically the same hour in and hour out for me for about 12 hours straight. There's less than a 1% shift in total. Very, very odd! Something is brewing. Just hope it's something positive. This past week has been absolutely horrible traffic-wise.

I don't see any reason why a website could be hit so bad that it gets the worst traffic in 8 years.

 6:21 am on Jun 5, 2012 (gmt 0)

Saw a uptick in traffic for 2 hours from Google at 9 and 10pm Central US time. Never happens. Very weird.

Constant traffic for 12 hours, then an uptick for 2 hours, then traffic goes back down to the previous 12 hours.

FWIW, Adsense earnings haven't changed one bit over the past week! Only traffic!

 7:40 am on Jun 5, 2012 (gmt 0)

I'm noticing since June that my bing traffic is almost the same as my Google traffic where normally it would be about 10% of google. Overall traffic slightly down. Very odd.

 7:44 am on Jun 5, 2012 (gmt 0)

I am also finding that I am getting lots more bing traffic yet my serp positions at bing haven't changed. It is like more people are using bing now or something.

@gary - seeing the exact same thing here. Worst year since 2005. Traffic has been on a light upswing from the crash it took starting in March. However, this morning I am getting a FLOOD of foreign traffic (again). I'm watching GART right now and I've got visitors from London, Amritsar, Makati, Suva, Vereeniging, Cape Town, New Delhi and NOT ONE in the United States. BTW, my site setting in WMT is for US traffic ONLY!

US sales appear throttled, I can't beat 6 sales per day to save my life and I'm getting what appears to be ample traffic to support 15 or more sales per day...but again, the traffic quality is poor and completely un-targeted (I won't say the Z word). It'll get a 2 hour period of "ON" traffic followed by 8 hours or more of absolutely nothing. This is very strange because ever since about 2005, I could tell time by the flow of completed sales through my site.

 7:24 pm on Jun 5, 2012 (gmt 0)

I am seeing more movement here in the UK, some terms quite substantial movement.

For those of you who think nothing is going on... your market isn't very competitive as other verticals I watch stand still.

 8:41 pm on Jun 5, 2012 (gmt 0)

It'll get a 2 hour period of "ON" traffic followed by 8 hours or more of absolutely nothing.

I have been seeing that too.

Usually conversions are early morning and late at night (US) but nothing in between.

Anyone else?

 9:36 pm on Jun 5, 2012 (gmt 0)

Actually now that you guys mention it I am finding similar On then Off traffic. really weird.

 12:23 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

I didn't think the SERP's could get any worse, but...they did.

I just did a search for my money term(which we'll call widget) and I'm seeing 3 pages on page 1(blue widget, black widget and brown widget) from a site I've never seen before.

Page 2 same thing, but a different site I've never seen before.

 12:53 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

I'm seeing same thing , one site on a few searches showing in 7 of the 10 spots. Hope this is a mistake. On another amazon is at all 10 spots on page 2

 1:02 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

It seems any product review queries or just queries on product are producing these sorts of results. Wonder if it has something to do with latest Google shopping changes.

 1:13 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

I'm seeing this also. This morning my site is showing up again for longtail keywords (After disappearing for 2 weeks).

Some keywords are displaying 4-5 results on page 1 and I even noticed one of my competitors showing up 7 times within page 1 & 2!

 3:50 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

We are seeing an increase in our Google referrals on our US based ecom site. It is pretty much all long tail. Not sure if an update rolled through or what's up. Traffic is up about 10-15% from the previous 8 weeks. Keywords found is up about 10-15%.

 4:07 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

Anyone feeling they are seeing on-again off-again traffic (or any kind of "throttling" or "zombie traffic") please check out our analysis thread: Zombie Traffic and Traffic Shaping/Throttling - Analysis [webmasterworld.com]

This kind of observation has been around for several years, but no one has pinned it down very well. The more people we have who can work with their own data on the topic, the more chance we have of deciding the issues involved.

I'm seeing the same thing here in the UK, this lovely Wednesday morning after a four day weekend of festivities.

Unfortunately, for me my site's rankings have fallen again.
I am beginning to really hate google.

 7:37 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

Google Update is very Good for me.. I am getting increase in traffic from Google AND ALSO GOT THE PAGE RANK FOR MAXIMUM OF INNER PAGES... If you are doing good things for your promotion then definitely you will get positive results..

 9:05 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

some sites recovered for me today, i de-optimezed and pruned links to them in the last few weeks

 11:47 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

On my affected brand 50% of positions are up, 50% are down. Exactly 50% in each case. Other brands are up slightly. Still no word of a Panda update, but something is going on...

 11:53 am on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

I asked Cutts again late last night, no updates were pushed out.

 12:22 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

@ rustybrick

Thanks for the update!

 12:43 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

Yesterday (5th) at 11pm UK time, something changed, the site that lost pretty much all its traffic on 16th May regained its positions, like a switch had been flicked back on. UK Aff site

 1:07 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

I closely monitor about 300 of our keywords. Sometime in the past 24 hours 210 of them dropped significantly. That's the sharpest drop I've seen since Panda 1.0 (we lost 230 keywords that day). I'm hoping it's just some bouncing around like I've noticed lately and not a sustained drop, but I don't have a good feeling about it.

Oddly, our traffic so far this morning isn't as devastatingly low as it was after the Panda 1.0 drop in kw. It's lower than I would expect, however.

 1:56 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

See lots of changes today, here in the UK. Multiple entries on first 3 pages all from a few sites for a general but valuable search term.

 2:28 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

Ran a 900 key phrase check over the past 7 hours...nothing but red "down" arrows. No improvements all negative movement.

@rajeshth02 - I'm curious, is your site CMS based? (wordpress, joomla, drupal)? do you sell a product or is your site a MFA only type site? approx how many pages?

 2:30 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

Usually conversions are early morning and late at night (US) but nothing in between.

Same pattern observed here...

 3:46 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

My sites's about the same, BUT I like today's SERPS on one of my top keyphrases much better than I've been liking them since Penguin. The big brands were getting 2-3 results each on page 1, and now they're each getting one result while some independent sites/blogs edge into the top 10.

Just curious: you know how some webpages show up in Google with a thumbnail? All the top sites in one of my niches have thumbnails. Does this mean Google is only rendering thumbnails for sites they like, or that they prefer sites that give them thumbnails and somehow some of us are unwittingly denying them thumbnails? Because all my sites have images, but no thumbnails are showing up. Maybe I've blocked Google images and should unblock?

Are you talking about Google authorship?

 5:48 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

@diberry that's encouraging. One of the reasons my site appeared to drop was this very phenomenon. One of the old authority sites came back from nowhere and started taking 2-3 places or search, together with another two sites doing exactly the same thing.

Chaos and certainly not a diverse set of results for the user point of view. I'd much rather see one result from each site, maybe two at the most but only from a single website.

I am of course biased and not the user... what would I know! =)

I am seeing this too - Very weird.

 9:32 pm on Jun 6, 2012 (gmt 0)

Seeing lots of ranking changes today across a small network after staying fairly static through all of Panda and Penguin. The sites that are affected negatively are pretty much exclusively the smaller longtail-targetted ones. Terms which have held Top 3 rankings for months and months have dropped several places.

Initially I thought it was keyword related but a couple of big sites in the network that are keyword-focused domains have had positive changes. One "brand" (it's not a keyword and 35% of previous searches are on the brand name - 200+ pages) has lost some significant longtail rankings too.

Something happened today, that's for sure.
