Google has been doing this for a long time. If Google thinks it is useful to the user they may display something different than your original title tag. It is not necessarily a bad thing. Google monitors CTR and if they see a higher CTR then they are more likely to display the altered title in the future. Google's altering of your title in the SERPS is likely driving more traffic to you.

Google was doing this "branding" several times for my pages. For me it seems that Google wants to make titles more unique. Normally I'm seeing this just in cases where the original title doesn't include the name of company/website. I overcome this problem by choosing titles which include the name of company/website.

It's not just branding, I have the following on my site for some pages... this is the actual title - primary keyword I realize that might suggest I should use the keyword in the title but for this site, on these pages, it doesn't make sense to do so.

I've experienced this as well, in fact I've seen Google override my meta tags with on-page content for certain keywords.
