Same happens to me. I'm not sure what really happened, our PR jumped from 1 to 3 and SERPS dropped from #1 to nowhere !

I found this hapening to me several months ago, I left it alone and it came back, although not in as good a position. Have you been link building recently?

Your site can drop if youre getting good traffic but youre not constantly building fresh links correct?

no we are doing quality linking.. all are links indexed and cached in google.. but don't understand why google shows this abnormal behavior in ranking.. any idea?

We made some redesign of pages. But keywords are not touched. Just plain html redesign.

I would be inclined to leave it for a few weeks and see if results come back naturally. I know it is hard to sit and watch nothing happening, if you begin changing your site you may end up giving yourself a lot of work and hasle for nothing.
I had 4 sites, all seemed to go the same as you describe. Here is what happened to them.
Site 1:
Sits now at #19 for main keyword, were as it had a top 10 slot before this
Site 2:
I had carried out minor site wide keyword work before I was dropped, traffic and positions now back after just more than 2 weeks
Site 3:
Back after 2 weeks of no Google traffic. Stronger and improved internal pages than before.
Site 4:
No improvement, Dropped from #1 to #5 for main keyword, but no internal page searches. Google traffic dropped over 90%, have give up on it, so if it improves it is a bonus.

- or some other?

the link back site is http://www.example.com or sometimes we used to add www.example.com and example.com.. and we had linking on www.example.com/index.aspx too ..but not heavily. ..

What exactly does that mean?
What do the backlink profiles look like of the sites that are linking to you? Do they have spammy backlinks?

no they are not spammy, mostly are the blogs sites.. and somehow we posted links on social networks... we also carried out article submission.. yes.. we had a minor change on our home page... where some text and few graphics were added "PLANET13" see we have pretty good campaigns but still not getting where exactly we did wrong..
