If all the sites are out of index as well then it might be related to some IP issue at the server level.

Some questions:
Did all of the sites drop in the rankings at the same time?

Do the sites link to each other?

Do the sites have the same owner in the Whois records?

I've seen reports of cases in which Google apparently penalized a number of websites that were all operated by the same person. That could be what happened here, since all the sites are on the same server. Unfortunately in many cases the exact cause of a Google penalty can't be determined with full certainty. If you have Webmaster Tools accounts for any of these sites, you should study their information very carefully looking for clues to the source of the problem.

You should check to make sure that the server is working properly, and also that a hacker hasn't gotten in and added hidden content or hidden links to some of your sites.

You should also study Google's webmaster guidelines to make sure that you haven't violated them in some way.

If you have Google Webmaster Tools accounts for some of the sites, you should carefully study that information to look for clues to the problem.

Question: Do you or your team write your own news articles?

We have seen an increase in "news sites" that clutter Twitter with tweets.

When we go and check them out most are scrapping content from legitimate news sites.

Some are so offensive that they scrape the text only and use hot linked images from the original news site - to save bandwidth I guess.

matt cutts said on twitter that they are aware of a lot of spam reaching the news section and the spam team is taking steps to correct this. If all your sites got hit, then I assume all your sites are setup the same/similar way which may have been dropped due to a new filter to prevent spam from reaching google news. I dont know if your site should be listed or not, but there are steps being taken, and like any update, legit sites will also get hit.
