I was checking on one of my sites and the preferrred domain is not set. I have been able to set that on other sites in webmaster tools.

I'm getting

Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://example.com/. Please verify http://example.com/.

I checked the verification and the home page shows "add or remove owners" and NOT "verify this site"

When I check further and check the verification history, I see that "Verification succeeded" 15 days ago.

So, it appears that the site is verified via a file and yet I can't set the preferred domain.

I'd appreciate any ideas. I did re-verify and it still says that I need to verify before I can set the preferred domain.

thanks

chris

[edit reason] switch to example.com - it can never be owned [/edit]

Is it possible that you set up this site as "www.example.com" and never set up or verified "example.com"?

i verified www.example.com and example.com. Now, my setting is "Don't set a preferred domain" but i wanna to set my urls as www.example.com. When i select this option and click save, i see a notice about "Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://example.com/. Please verify http://example.com/."

But its already verified before.

@cmendla
If you are trying to set preferred domain for a sub-domain that you get this message. For a normal www domain it should not come.

SOLVED -

Thanks everyone... I added example.com to my WMT account and verified that. The file for verification was the same as www.example.com.

As soon as I did that, I was able to set my preferences.
