Following my post last year here on "Developing new website on old established domain - Part 2"
[webmasterworld.com ]

Now finally, the old domain that I bought 20 months ago has started ranking. It is on page 3 for the main keyword but number 1 for mydomainname

Bravo!

Did you identify any particular actions that helped? or was it just a matter of waiting for a long enough time?

In your first thread you said that the original site had been replaced by a parked page for a year before you bought it. You also said that it had some good legacy backlinks including a listing in the Yahoo directory.

But I recall reading somewhere that after a certain time period Google may start ignoring the legacy backlinks of a site that has been replaced by a parked page. If that's true, then it could explain part of the problem.

I would add 1 or 2 pages in every month. But that's what I've been doing since the beginning. I wasn't giving the site much interest because I was waiting for it to come out of whatever the penalty it was in.

I guess you just have to wait. In my case, I've had 2 websites gone through different penalty.

The first one was over-optimization penalty. I waited for 18-20 months without doing anything and then it started to rank.

This old domain name that I bought is the second site. again I had to wait for 18-20 months and it came out of the penalty.

Now I just assume that it would roughly takes about 20 months for a site to come out of a penalty if the penalty is hard enough that it was no where to be found on the search result for its main keyword.

I've no idea if the legacy backlinks still count but the site has a good PageRank and the ranking seems to be constantly going towards the top.
