Here's a new video about optimizing for Google News Search, from Google's Maile Ohye. One tip I was a bit surprised by is that if you want to see your images show up in Google News, then you should NOT make them links. Here's the video:

What I read from that also is that you need the image to be the full-size version rather than a thumbnail.

fishfinger, not necessarily. You may have a 250*400 image as well and it may be included in Google News, though the higher the resolution, the higher the chance of being picked up. Note that there are other requirements as well: [google.com...] , plus the image has to be on the same domain. tedster, the "inline images" requirement is quite old, really. If you want to link to the full size image the best method is to link from the caption or with javascript. (TC of G/News)

So how much of that can also be applied to ordinary search, Google Images and Blogsearch etc?

Almost nothing. Google News is very different from the other search apps of Google.
